Last year was the hottest year since global temperature records began, and 2024 has reportedly been hotter. Heat waves, droughts, tropical cyclones, floods and landslides are just a few of the phenomena that many parts of the world are more frequently facing today. These extreme weather events claim lives and harm human health in various ways. They also destroy critical infrastructure and human livelihoods. The impact of extreme weather events on agriculture has been especially devastating because agriculture is heavily dependent on weather conditions. Climate change is already reducing crop yields, especially in tropical and subtropical regions, with the African continent suffering the most. Recent studies show that the average crop yield in some African countries today is 40 percent lower than what it would have been without climate change. In parts of Asia and Latin America, the average crop yield is 20-30 percent lower, and the situation could get worse. Productivity in the livestock and aquaculture sectors, too, has reduced. To prevent the food insecurity problem from worsening, actions should be taken in five areas on a priority basis. First, the world has to take bolder climate action. Every effort to curb global warming is crucial for reducing the likelihood and frequency of catastrophic weather events. Hence, all sectors, including agriculture, that contribute in no small measure to climate change should take immediate measures to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Second, food systems need to be made more climate-resilient by further diversifying crops and cultivating harder crops and animal breeds with the help of new genomic breeding technologies. To achieve this, advanced technologies should also be made accessible to smallholder farmers in Africa. Third, the functioning of food markets needs to be improved, and measures should be taken to better connect poor households to the markets. Since some regions of the world are more vulnerable to climate change, efficient international exchange is key to preventing food scarcity at the local level. Policies that impede trade need to be abandoned to ensure efficient international exchange. Fourth, poor people in many rural areas of Africa and Asia depend primarily on agriculture for their livelihoods. In case of crop failures, these households lose their source of income. So, new channels for generating employment in non-agricultural rural sectors should be explored to reduce poverty and help people adapt to climate change. Fifth, there is also a need to strengthen the social safety nets in low – and middle-income countries. Extreme weather events and related shocks are becoming more frequent, hurting poor people the most, so safety nets need to be strengthened to stabilise the dietary intakes of the most vulnerable sections of society. In other words, more investment is needed to enable rapid action in these five areas, while low – and middle-income countries should take measures on a priority basis to make food systems more resilient. Not to mention that high-income countries are obligated to shoulder their international responsibility to help low – and middle-income countries deal with the climate challenge. With strong global cooperation, a world without hunger remains a realistic goal to achieve. Almost every second business lacks confidence in deepfake detection, according to a new industry assessment. This particularly relates to uncertainty with detection, leaving firms vulnerable to rising fraud risks. The study also uncovers significant gaps in preparedness, particularly in the Financial Services sector, where the threat is growing. The study comes from Regula , a global developer of identity verification solutions. The key message is a gap in preparedness: nearly half of businesses admit they are only partially confident in their ability to detect deepfakes, leaving them vulnerable to escalating fraud risks. Based on Regula’s study, “ The Deepfake Trends 2024 ,” 59 percent of businesses consider video deepfakes a serious threat, while 58 percent feel the same about audio deepfakes. (AP) — The North Carolina Democratic Party sued on Friday to block the potential removal of tens of thousands of ballots tallied in an extremely close state Supreme Court race, saying state election officials would be violating federal law if they sided with protests initiated by the trailing Republican candidate. The lawsuit filed in Raleigh federal court comes as attorneys for Court of Appeals Judge Jefferson Griffin also went to state courts on Friday to attempt to force the State Board of Elections to act more quickly on accusations contained in the protests. The board tentatively planned to hold a public hearing on the protests next Wednesday, according to a board email provided with Griffin's motion. Griffin wants a final decision from the board earlier. Democratic Associate Justice Allison Riggs leads Griffin by 734 votes following a machine recount of over 5.5 million ballots cast in their Nov. 5 election. A partial hand recount began this week and is nearly complete. But Griffin, joined by three other GOP state legislative candidates, contend that well over 60,000 ballots shouldn't have counted, casting doubt on election results. Among their complaints: voter registration records of some voters casting ballots lack driver’s license or partial Social Security numbers, and overseas voters never living in North Carolina have run afoul of state residency requirements. The Democratic Party's lawsuit said that some of the protests represent “systematic challenges to voter eligibility” that counter a federal law's prohibition of what's essentially removing people from voter registration lists retroactively after an election. Usually three members on the 15-judge court — second only to the Supreme Court in state's jurisprudence — hear such motions. “Public trust in our electoral processes depends on both fair and efficient procedures to determine the outcome of our elections. By failing to give a timely decision, the State Board continues to undermine the public interest,” Griffin attorney Troy Shelton wrote. Attorneys for Riggs separately on Friday also responded to Griffin's actual protests before the board, saying they should all be denied. Griffin led Riggs — one of two Democrats on the seven-member court — by about 10,000 votes on election night, but that lead dwindled and flipped to Riggs as tens of thousands of qualifying provisional and absentee ballots were added to the totals through the canvass. BOSTON — Forty years ago, Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie rolled to his right and threw a pass that has become one of college football’s most iconic moments. This moment in the cold and dark is also the climax of the Great Pretending. You knew it would come to this for “Joe Biden,” that he would be found-out. That in the waning days of his woebegone term in office, the people around him in the White House would betray him with the truth: that he was mentally unfit for the job from even before the get-go, from those drear days in the fall campaign of 2020 when he hid himself at home in Delaware while the FBI covered-up the massive bribery-and-treason story concealed in Hunter’s laptop. And that for four years since then those people around “Joe Biden” have pretended to the world that he was doing his job, that he was okay, when he was absolutely not okay, as they well knew. It was only one big lie among the thousands of lies put over by the conspiracy between that gang in the White House and the perfidious organs of the news, especially The New York Times . There was no other way because the crime was so great and they were all in it so deep — not just Rochelle and Mandy but the hundreds of high-ranking bureaucrats in CDC, FDA, and NIH who went along with all this. Of course, it’s hard to know whether the Covid-19 affair was just a venal and insane project by Anthony Fauci and his colleagues to play “hero” while making a ton of money. . . or whether it was actually a deliberate effort by the Intel Blob to queer the 2020 election by forcing a change in the voting procedure that would allow for wholesale fraud, in the service of cancelling Donald Trump. Possibly, it was a mash-up of both. The truth about all this, and a lot more, is going to come out, whether or not Bobby Kennedy, Kash Patel, and other nominees get confirmed in their jobs, because there are many other figures just as capable behind them who would be nominated and eventually confirmed to run these departments. Those New York Times journalists are gaslighting themselves further if they think that blocking a few nominations is going to save their reputations. This populist revolution is bigger than that. It’s about overturning a paradigm of lies. We really don’t know if our country is too far gone. The wreckage accomplished under the fakery of “Joe Biden” is prodigious. The financial quandaries alone are enough to sink the Republic in penury, and it will be hard to dodge the truth about that, too, because individual citizens and households know when they are hurting. When they hurt enough, they move to action, visibly, loudly, and you will not miss it. This ought to be a sobering Christmas then. The Alberta government has released new wind and solar development rules it says are needed to protect the environment, food security and the province’s scenery. The Electric Energy Land Use and Visual Assessment Regulation says wind projects will no longer be permitted within specified “buffer zones” that encompass much of the Rocky Mountain areas. Wind and renewable electricity projects located in other select areas — including around Cypress Hills provincial park and large pockets of southern Alberta — will need to be assessed for their impact on landscape views before possible approval. All renewable developers must pony up ahead of time all reclamation costs through a mandatory security or bond either to the province or to private landowners. Renewable energy projects won’t be allowed on top grade agricultural land unless developers can prove the projects can productively coexist with livestock and crops. Health experts call for a return of social distancing as cases surge across UK this ChristmasCroatia’s incumbent President Zoran Milanovic won most of the votes in the first round of a presidential election on Sunday but must face a runoff against a ruling party candidate to secure another five-year term. WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors moved Monday to dismiss the criminal charges against President-elect Donald Trump that accused him of plotting to overturn the 2020 election and to abandon the classified documents case against him, citing longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. The decision by special counsel Jack Smith, who had fiercely sought to hold Trump criminally accountable for his efforts to subvert the 2020 election, represented the end of the federal effort against the former president following his election victory this month despite the election-related cases and multiple other unrelated criminal charges against him and is headed back to the White House. The disturbing sight of young people from traveller communities up and down the country - many of them children - being herded onto trains by police at Manchester Victoria railway station on Saturday has prompted anger, consternation and concern. The obvious upset, however, isn't confined to people from those traveller communities. The question being privately asked of Greater Manchester Police bosses by the Mayor's Office is whether it was really proportionate to use a so-called 'section 34' order to cover the whole of Manchester city centre . For some, it is an indiscriminate, blunt weapon that risks collateral damage. The order, made under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, allows police to turn people away from a specified geographical area if they think there might be trouble - and arrest those who refuse. The arrival of hundreds of young people from traveller communities from all across the country to enjoy Manchester's Christmas markets has become an important date in the social calendar of those communities. But it has also proved something of a headache, particularly for security and retailers in the Arndale centre which has been a particular focal point for young visitors. In November 2022, police were called to break up a 'huge' gathering of young traveller people at the Arndale amid reports that fire alarms had been triggered, fireworks set-off and people were 'running up and down the tram tracks' in Exchange Square. An even larger gathering of youths happened at the Arndale again on Saturday. Councillor Pat Karney, the council's city centre spokesman, was there and he tweeted that there were about 400 youths gathered, aged between nine and 19. He told the Manchester Evening News he saw no trouble 'unlike previous occasions' as he praised the efforts of police and security staff. However, the mass gatherings seen at the Arndale in previous years formed part of the decision-making of GMP bosses when they decided to sign the dispersal order. The city was also packed with people out Christmas shopping and football fans heading to the Etihad stadium for Manchester City's match against Tottenham Hotspur. It was very busy. The dispersal order, signed by a senior police officer at 12.13pm on Saturday, was 'in response to a rising number of reports, and in the interest of protecting the public from excessive anti-social behaviour, disorder, and criminality over the weekend', said the officer who signed it. GMP later clarified the order was 'due to intelligence' that groups of people were en route to Manchester on trains 'causing antisocial behaviour', with similar reports of trouble in the city centre already coming in. The order was signed and the effect was that cops were dispatched to Victoria and Piccadilly railway stations under instruction to stop the groups and send them back. Mobile footage shared widely online showed uniformed officers escorting young people into trains at Victoria, with many of them clearly unclear where exactly they were going to end up. One girl, aged 13, who had come from Doncaster, ended up in Grimsby. She said: "She didn't have a clue where it was going. She was crying and screaming. I could hear the police officers saying 'we don't care where you go, just get back on that train and get off now'. I was saying to put the police officers on the phone but I could hear them saying 'I don't want to speak to your mother - get on that train'." Jonny O'Brien, 26, claimed his 14-year-old sister was 'bullied' onto a train to Manchester Airport . A woman from Lancashire, 34, who declined to be named, said she was 'pushed, pulled and shouted at' by police at Victoria before being forced onto a train to York. "I haven't done anything wrong apart from going to the Christmas markets. It was an absolutely horrible experience," she said. Other footage showed police officers preventing some young travellers from entering stores in the city centre. The force confirmed later that they had broken up two fights and at least 40 individual dispersal orders were made telling people to leave town. The Traveller Movement, a national charity, said the police action was 'shocking' and 'completely unacceptable'. It is considering legal action. Greater Manchester's deputy mayor, Kate Green, called for a 'full report' from GMP. Most of those who visited on Saturday came from the north west and the Welsh borders. It was supposed to be a day out 'in their finery', according to the charity, which confirmed some visitors were as young as 11 although these were said to be accompanied by older siblings. Wordings of survey questions might not be reported by the mass media, for lack of space or journalistic interest, but should be in the technical reports of the survey doer, in line with standard codes of professional ethics for opinion research. Thus, to clearly understand the recent crime victimization report of Social Weather Stations (SWS), see the technical report, “Families victimized by crime rise to 6.1 percent in Sept. 2024; victimization by cybercrimes rises to 7.2 percent; neighborhood fears stay high,” (www.sws.org.ph, 11/9/2024). It shows that the SWS numbers are not mere “perceptions” of crime, but actual instances of being burglarized at home, robbed on the street, having a motor vehicle stolen, being hurt by physical violence, or victimized by cybercrime, in the past six months, by a member of a statistically representative national sample of families. The SWS survey question-wordings have been very carefully maintained from the start—Feb. 1989 for (1) street robbery, (2) home burglary, and (3) physical violence, April 1993 for (4) carnapping, and June 2023 for (5) cybercrime—to the present, since the SWS intent is to monitor well-being over time. The SWS surveys have been quarterly since 1992, with no break except for the 2020 pandemic. All the raw data, and all the questions asked, are in the SWS archives. Incidentally, the latest incidence of victimization by cybercrime is higher than the combined sum of the other crimes listed. Cybercrime is the new scourge. The fears of crime in the neighborhood, on the other hand, are perceptions indeed, but SWS has separate numbers for them. The victimizations experienced by the people are much higher than those they report to the police—we know this because of past SWS surveys, sponsored by the Philippine National Police itself. (Reports of commissioned SWS surveys are open to research, after temporary embargo. The main reason for non-reporting of crime is the expectation that nothing will come of it anyway.) Survey researchers control only the questions, not the answers. I remember from the 1990s that the American Association for Public Opinion Research held a contest for the best slogan for its annual conference. The one I liked most was: “We may not have all the answers; but we have all the questions.” If one is already sure about the answer, then there’s no need to ask the question. The rationale for exposing a survey questionnaire is to demonstrate that it has no leading questions. If a survey sponsor asks that some leading questions be asked, the survey doer may reject the request, and cite the code of professional ethics as justification. Ethical research engenders respect, and repeat business. The answers to a multiple-choice question are part of the question. A survey question starts with its introduction, if any, and ends with the full listing of answers to choose from. If the research is seeking to explain some belief, attitude, intention, or behavior, then it is impractical to simply ask “Why?” This will easily result in as many one- or two-liners as respondents, i.e. hundreds, even thousands of lines to read through and try to classify. As a general rule, it’s more efficient for the researcher to group the possible answers according to the competing hypotheses: Reason A, Reason B, Reason C, etc. It’s alright to allow a few (say, up to three) multiple answers. Catch-alls like “none of the above,” and “other” are alright, if they are expected to get only single-digit results; be ready for some “no response” and “refused to answer” too. How about the “who will you vote for” question? As a general rule, a pre-election pollster should present the candidates’ names in exactly the same way as in the Commission on Elections (Comelec) protocol on election day: with correct spelling, nickname, party affiliation, and so forth, in alphabetical order (for senators) or in numerical order (for party list), as pertinent. Note that assignment of random numbers to the party lists has been introduced by the Comelec in recognition that mere location on the candidates list can affect the choice of voters. (Suppose that, at the end of the Comelec list, there is an empty box without a name? I wouldn’t be surprised if some voters shade the unnamed box, thinking it might be for a mystery candidate!) If dissatisfied with the questions of a survey, there’s the recourse of designing and implementing one’s own questions, and then comparing the answers. A man has been charged with allegedly stabbing his ex-partner at her Donegal home. The man, who is in his 30s, was brought before a special sitting of Ballyshannon District Court earlier today. The accused cannot be named for legal reasons in order to protect the identity of the alleged victim. Inspector Anthony Coyle gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. The court heard that a protection order was served on the man in early November. He is charged that, at a named address in Donegal, he contravened a protection order in that he entered the home of the applicant without invitation and assaulted her by stabbing her. The charge is contrary to section 33(1) of the Domestic Violence Act, 2018. There was no objection to bail, which was granted by Judge Brendan O’Reilly on the accused’s own bond. Bail conditions include that he be of good behaviour and commit no further offence and reside at a name address and inform Gardai of any change. He must also comply with the terms of the protection order; have no contact, either directly or indirectly, to include social media, with the alleged injured party and any witnesses and stay away from a named address. Last year was the hottest on record due to human-caused climate change coupled with the effects of an El Nino. But after this summer registered as the hottest on record — Phoenix sweltered through 113 consecutive days with a high temperature of at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit — scientists anticipated 2024 would set a new annual record as well. In November, global temperatures averaged 14.10C (57.38F). Last year's global average temperature was 14.98C (59F). It's no secret that a warming world will drive food prices higher, a phenomenon increasingly known as " heatflation ." What's less known, but a growing area of interest among economists and scientists alike, is the role individual extreme weather events — blistering temperatures in Texas , a destructive tornado in Iowa — may have on what U.S. consumers pay at the supermarket. At first glance, the answer might seem logical: A drought or flood that impacts agricultural production will, eventually, drive up prices. But it's not that simple, because what consumers pay for groceries isn't only reflective of crop yields or herd sizes, but the whole supply chain. As Grist reports, that's where it gets interesting: Economists are beginning to see a growing trend that suggests weather forecasts play a part in sticker shock. Sometimes the mere prediction of an extreme event — like the record-breaking temperatures, hurricanes, and wildfires forecasters are bracing for this summer — can prompt a spike in prices. It isn't the forecast itself to blame, but concerns about what the weather to come might mean for the entire supply chain, as food manufacturers manage their risks and the expected future value of their goods, said Seungki Lee, an agricultural economist at Ohio State University. "When it comes to the climate risk on food prices, people typically look at the production side. But over the last two years, we learned that extreme weather can raise food prices, [cause] transportation disruptions, as well as production disruptions," said Lee. How much we pay for the food we buy is determined by retailers, who consider the producer's price, labor costs, and other factors. Any increases in what producers charge is typically passed on to consumers because grocery stores operate on thin profit margins. And if manufacturers expect to pay more for commodities like beef or specialty crops like avocados in the future, they may boost prices now to cover those anticipated increases. "The whole discussion about the climate risks on the food supply chain is based on probabilities," Lee said. "It is possible that we do not see extreme temperatures this summer, or even later this year. We may realize there was no significant weather shock hitting the supply chain, but unfortunately that will not be the end of the story." Supply chain disruptions and labor shortages are among the reasons food prices have climbed 25 percent since 2020 . Climate change may be contributing as well. A study published earlier this year found " heatflation " could push them up by as much as 3 percentage points per year worldwide in just over a decade and by about 2 percentage points in North America. Simultaneous disasters in major crop and cattle producing regions around the world — known as multi-breadbasket failure — are among the primary forces driving these costs. Crop shortages in these regions may also squeeze prices, which can create volatility in the global market and bump up consumer costs. Historically, a single, localized heat wave or storm typically wouldn't disrupt the supply chain enough to prompt price hikes. But a warming world might be changing that dynamic as extreme weather events intensify and simultaneous occurrences of them become the norm. How much this adds to consumers' grocery bills will vary, and depends upon whether these climate-fueled disasters hit what Lee calls "supply chain chokepoints" like vital shipping channels during harvest seasons. "As the weather is getting more and more volatile because of climate change, we are seeing this issue more frequently," he said. "So what that means is the supply chain is getting more likely to be jeopardized by these types of risks that we have never seen before." An ongoing drought that plagued the Mississippi River system from the fall of 2022 until February provides an excellent example of this. The Mississippi River basin, which covers 31 states, is a linchpin of America's agricultural supply chain. It produces 92 percent of the nation's agricultural exports, 78 percent of the world's feed grains and soybeans , and most of the country's livestock. Vessels navigating its roughly 2,350 miles of channels carry 589 million tons of cargo annually . Transportation barriers created by low water, seen above, hampered the ability of crop-producing states in the Corn Belt to send commodities like corn and soybeans, primarily used for cattle feed, to livestock producers in the South. Thus emerged a high demand, low supply situation as shipping and commodity prices shot up , with economists expecting consumers to absorb those costs . Past research showing that retail prices increase alongside commodity prices suggests that the drought probably contributed to higher overall food costs last year — and because droughts have a lingering impact on production even after they end, it may be fueling stubbornly high grocery prices today. But although it seems clear that the drought contributed to higher prices, particularly for meat and dairy products, just how much remains to be gauged. One reason for that is a lack of research analyzing the relationship between this particular weather event and the consumer market. Another is it's often difficult to tease out which of several possible factors, including global trade, war, and export bans , influence specific examples of sticker shock. While droughts definitely prompt decreases in agricultural production, Metin Çakır, an economist at the University of Minnesota, says whether that is felt by consumers depends on myriad factors. "This would mean higher raw ingredient costs for foods sold in groceries, and part of those higher costs will be passed onto consumers via higher prices. However, will consumer prices actually increase? The answer depends on many other supply and demand factors that might be happening at the same time as the impact of the drought," said Çakır. In a forthcoming analysis previewed by Grist, Çakır examined the relationship between an enduring drought in California, which produces a third of the nation's vegetables and nearly two-thirds of its fruits and nuts , and costs of produce purchased at large grocery retailers nationwide. While the event raised consumer vegetable prices to a statistically significant degree, they didn't increase as much as Çakır expected. This capricious consumer cost effect is due largely to the resiliency of America's food system . Public safety nets like crop insurance and other federal programs have played a large part in mitigating the impacts of adverse weather and bolstering the food supply chain against climate change and other shocks. By ensuring farmers and producers don't bear the brunt of those losses, these programs reduce the costs passed on to consumers. Advanced agricultural technology, modern infrastructure, substantial storage, and efficient transport links also help ensure retail price stability. A 2024 study of the role climate change played on the U.S. wheat market from 1950 to 2018 found that although the impact of weather shocks on price variability has increased with the frequency of extreme weather, adaptive mechanisms, like a well-developed production and distribution infrastructure with sufficient storage capacity, have minimized the impact on consumers. Still, the paper warns that such systems may collapse when faced with "unprecedented levels of weather variability." Last year was the world's warmest on record , creating an onslaught of challenges for crop and livestock producers nationwide. And this year is primed to be even more brutal , with the transition from El Niño — an atmospheric phenomenon that warms ocean temperatures — to La Niña , its counterpart that cools them. This cyclical change in global weather patterns is another potential threat for crop yields and source of supply chain pressures that economists and scientists are keeping an eye on. They will be particularly focused on the Midwest and stretches of the Corn Belt, two regions prone to drought as an El Niño cycle gives way to a La Niña, according to Weston Anderson, an assistant research scientist at the University of Maryland and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Those growing regions for corn and soybeans are what he'll be watching closely as La Niña develops. It's something Jennifer Ifft, an agricultural economist at Kansas State University, is also thinking about. "If you have a very severe drought in the Corn Belt ... that's going to be the biggest deal, because that's gonna raise the cost of production for cattle, hogs, poultry," said Ifft. "So that would probably have the largest inflationary impacts." As of January , U.S. beef herd inventory was at its lowest in 73 years, which multiple reports noted is due to the persisting drought that began in 2020 . Americans, the majority of whom are already spending more on groceries than last year, are poised to soon see "record" beef prices at the supermarket. Food prices are also expected to rise another 2.2 percent in 2024 , according to the USDA's Economic Research Service. In a world enmeshed in extremes, our already-fragile food supply chain could be the next system teetering on the edge of collapse because of human-caused climate change. Former President Barack Obama changed the official name to Denali in 2015 to reflect the traditions of Alaska Natives as well as the preference of many Alaska residents. The federal government in recent years has endeavored to change place-names considered disrespectful to Native people. “Denali” is an Athabascan word meaning “the high one" or “the great one.” A prospector in 1896 dubbed the peak “Mount McKinley” after President William McKinley, who had never been to Alaska. That name was formally recognized by the U.S. government until Obama changed it over opposition from lawmakers in McKinley's home state of Ohio. Trump suggested in 2016 that he might undo Obama's action, but he dropped that notion after Alaska's senators objected. The Prime Minister is set to promise a named, contactable police officer for every neighbourhood in England and Wales as he lays out his “plan for change” on Thursday. In a speech billed as setting out the “next phase” of his Government , Sir Keir Starmer is expected to detail ambitious “milestones” for achieving the five missions laid out in Labour’s manifesto. He will say: “My Government was elected to deliver change, and today marks the next step. People are tired of being promised the world, but short-term sticking plaster politics letting them down.” But Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has already branded the speech an “emergency reset” after a challenging five months in office. Downing Street said the milestones would focus on raising living standards, rebuilding Britain, ending hospital backlogs, putting more police on the beat, giving children the best start in life and securing home-grown energy. Among the promises expected to be announced on Thursday is a guarantee that every neighbourhood will have a named, contactable police officer responsible for dealing with local issues. The Prime Minister is expected to describe the move as “a relief to millions of people scared to walk their streets they call home”, and promise a range of policing reforms to improve performance alongside £100 million to support neighbourhood policing. Labour has already pledged to recruit 13,000 new police officers, PCSOs and special constables, which would bring the total police workforce to a level above its 2010 peak. Police numbers following the 2010 election, before rising again after 2019 as the previous government pledged to recruit 20,000 police officers. While the number of officers reached record levels, the number of PCSOs and special constables continued to decline. The promise of a named officer for each community is intended to improve relations between the police and the public. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “Out neighbourhood policing guarantee is about more than just increasing numbers. It’s about rebuilding the vital connection between the public and the police. “This marks a return to the founding principles of British policing – where officers are part of the communities they serve.” But the Conservatives said only a third of the 13,000 new recruits would be full police officers, while the £100 million would not cover what was needed to pay for them, leading to cuts elsewhere. In a letter, Musk’s lawyer Alex Spiro tells the outgoing SEC chairman, Gary Gensler, that the commission’s demand for a monetary payment is a “misguided scheme” that won’t intimidate Musk. The letter also alleges that the commission reopened an investigation this week into Neuralink, Musk’s computer-to-human brain interface company. The SEC has not released the letter. Tests show mixed results for US students There isn’t a definitive way to rank a country’s education quality, but multiple studies show results contrary to the trend claimed in the post. Martin Carnoy , a professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, told USA TODAY that the claim is “completely inaccurate.” “These are very rough comparisons, but it can be said that U.S. middle school and secondary students have always done poorly on international tests of mathematics compared to students in other developed countries and have done better in science and reading,” Carnoy said. By Buzz Trexler Star Correspondent The Elizabethton School Board approved a $375,000 XQ Institute Super School grant extension that will fund a full-time community partnership coordinator, a position also approved during the regular monthly meeting Thursday night. According to a job description posted on employment sites earlier this month, the coordinator “will play a pivotal role in advancing experiential learning for students, with a particular focus on internships, work-based learning, and community-engaged learning.” Among the key responsibilities will be overseeing the development of a Community Partnership Advisory Group, creating partnerships with local businesses and organizations to create work-based learning and community-engaged learning opportunities, conducting work-based learning site assessments, and establishing postsecondary partnerships. The annual salary and benefits are budgeted at $118,000 for 2025, with $25,000 budgeted for 2024, and $34,000 for 2026, with the remainder of the budget including: — stipends for a summer success coordinator, $6,000; — storytelling and professional learning, including airfare, lodging, food, and event fees associated with hosting school visits and Appalachian Learning Network events, $84,750; — student technology and tools, which includes funding for student travel to events and school visits, $52,500; — one-time disbursement to cover costs of completing the Community Development and Engagement Center (CDEC) at the former Union Prescription Shop building on Bemberg Road, $25,000; — consulting services for implementation of vision and programming, $15,000; — funding for communication materials, including design work, printing, digital materials, and Cyclone U, $7,500; and — funding for student practicum experiences, including travel, supplies, and other associated needs, $7,250. “It’s really hard to believe that it’s been almost a decade since we submitted the original application for the Super School grant,” said Dr. Jon Minton, Elizabethton High School principal. According to previous reporting, the system received its first XQ Institute Super School grant in 2016, followed by a $2.8 million award in 2018. In other action, the board: — voted to appoint Eddie Pless as chairman, and Jamie Schaff as vice chair; — recognized Dr. Robert Lewis, who was elected to the board on Nov. 5; and — recognized the Elizabethton High School Robotics Team, Harper Shelton, Bryson Hardin, and former City Mayor Curt Alexander. — approved a corporate purchasing contract with Central Technologies to install cameras, access control, and halo sensors (vaping detectors) in the Dave Rider Center for Athletic performance at a cost of $42,261.44; — approved creating two full-time classified teacher assistant positions to meet the needs of special education students; — approved a three-year contract with Sherry Grubb Photography, beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, with the option to renew annually for an additional two years; — approved a three-year contract with Randall Bennett Photography, beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, with the option to renew annually for an additional two years; and — approved the 2026-2027 school calendar. Personnel Actions The board approved the following teachers for tenure: Brittany Johnson and Kendall Treadway, East Side Elementary (ESE); Abigail Thacker, Hannah Calhoun, and Devin Whitehead, T.A. The Chiefs turned in the same injury report on Monday that they did on Sunday and that’s not great news for defensive tackle Chris Jones’s chances of playing. Jones strained his calf in Saturday’s win over the Texans and he has been listed as out of practice both days. Those listings are estimations because the Chiefs have only had walkthroughs leading into Wednesday’s game against the Steelers, but the quick turnaround never boded well for Jones being in the lineup. Left tackle D.J. Humphries (hamstring) and cornerback Chamarri Conner (concussion) didn’t play on Saturday and they appear on track to miss another game as they’ve also been listed as out two days in a row. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor (knee) is the only player listed as a limited participant. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes (ankle), wide receiver Xavier Worthy (ankle) and center Creed Humphrey (shoulder) are notables listed as full participants.
