The Mountain Trike Drivetrain is setup with a simple and reliable single gear system which provides excellent drive up hills and off road while providing a reasonable speed (usually quicker than walking) on flatter ground. It is aimed more at climbing hills, obstacles and difficult terrain than out and out speed.

It is possible to alter this ratio to suit individual riders by fitting larger sprockets to the drivetrain which is a simple way of making the gear harder, but providing faster top speeds. This can suit particularly strong individuals who may live in flatter areas.

On the whole, the vast majority of our customers use the standard setup though as this is great all round gear for most situations.

Every Trike rider is different and all have varying abilities. The main ability that you do need for our lever drive range is upper body strength and good hand grip. If you are able to propel a ‘normal’ chair it is quite enough. If you are unsure about your hand grip the best advise we can give is to go to bike shop and have a squeeze of some brake levers to get a feel for it. You will need to try hydraulic disc brakes, ideally Avid Elixir's as this is a perfect match.

For those customers with limited hand function please see our MT Evo product as it is likely this will be more suitable for you. And if you aren't sure you have the strength to self propel our eTrike - electric power assist might be more suitable as this offers flexible riding. Further detail on the eTrike, here.

Our MT Push and ePush range is very popular with families and perfect for children who are unable to self-propel or for older parents. The steering and braking takes place in the push handle located behind the rider.

It is important that you can comfortably reach the drive levers and use the appropriate amounts of force and control to safely operate the lever drive Mountain Trike range.
The drive levers will propel the Trike forward by driving each of the two front wheels independently. Upon pushing the levers forward, the drive will engage, turning the wheels, resulting in forward motion. Upon pulling the levers back, the drive system allows the levers free motion to return before beginning another driving push. It is possible to push both levers together, alternate left and right or even to drive short distances one handed by only pushing the steering handle.

The key features of the eTrike is that it can be ridden in 3 ways:

Manually by pushing the drive levers as normal; Power assist by twisting the throttle; Hybrid by pushing drive levers and twisting throttle simultaneously.

eTrike how to ride and info

The footrest folds out of the way to create a space in front of the seat. You can either slide from your other chair, and go in sidewards, or enter from the front.

The MT, MT Evo & MT Push weighs around 20kg, and folds to a cube size of 28inches by 28inches (84 cms).

The eTrike and ePush weighs 26kg and can fold to the same size cube.

The handle on the push range can be removed for transport. The handle is still linked to the Mountain Trike via the brake hoses. The ePush has additional control wires running up the handle too, but won't effect the folding.

Our products will fit in a normal sized hatchback car - please refer to our recommendations for transporting here.

We will start production once your deposit has been received and keep you updated with progress. When your Trike build is complete we will send you the final invoice for payment. Once final payment has been received we will arrange delivery with you.

Due to external disruptions with parts our current lead time is between 24-26 weeks. We are working hard to reduce this lengthy lead-time but this is a common problem with suppliers

Since the start of 2021 we have been experiencing very high demand for our products and longer than usual production times which in some cases, unfortunately, even extend beyond timings we had initially expected. This is due to high demand for components globally and various other challenges further down our supply chain in terms of international shipping and manufacture. Various elements of the Mountain Trike build are bought in bike components from specialist suppliers or specialist processes such as powder coating, anodising and painting. Many of these suppliers are being forced to extend delivery times often with little notice which impacts on our own delivery times. Production of our products for our customers is and always will be our priority - we understand the frustrations with the longer lead times.

All Mountain Trike products come equipped with two high specification mountain bike hydraulic disc brakes. These provide an unsurpassed level of braking power and control. The brakes work on the two driven wheels and are controlled by the brake levers mounted on each drive lever. The MT Push brakes are operated on the Push handle located behind the rider.

The Trike uses lever mounted controls. The ability to use the braking system correctly, using your hands/fingers, is fundamental to safe operation. The efficiency of the lever drive is also dependent on choosing the right size with the right amount of reach. If this is not correct it will result in increased levels of fatigue and poor performance so we always recommend letting us know all measurements when ordering your Trike.

Mountain Trikes have brake levers which can be adjusted for reach. If you have small hands or find it difficult to squeeze the brake levers, then the levers can adjust the reach within the range provided by the brake manufacturer.

Turning is achieved by pointing the steering handle in the direction that you want to go, turn it left to go left and right to go right. This turns the rear wheel like the rudder of a boat. Sounds simple? It is, but it can take a few moments to get used to.

The anti-tip wheels at the front of the Mountain Trike products are designed to prevent the rider from tipping too far forward and falling out when applying the brakes. The use of a seat belt will help riders remain securely in the seat in the event of tipping. Use the brakes gently and avoid going fast around corners until you build your riding and handling confidence.

For our e-assist products - donuts are not recommended as turning at speed could cause the chair to tip over.

Due to the potential safety risks of operating a badly maintained Mountain Trike, it is recommended that you follow the recommended maintenance schedule. Due to the vast range of individual abilities, it is the responsibility of the user or the user’s guardian(s) to deem the rider as suitable for using the Mountain Trike. As with any new mobility product, there are certain risk of injury and damage. By choosing to ride a Mountain Trike product, you assume the responsibility for that risk, so you need to know and to practice the rules of safe and responsible riding and of proper use and maintenance. Proper use and maintenance of your Mountain Trike reduces risk of injury.

Our products are designed to safely carry up to a 100 kilo person. For the MT, MT Evo and eTrike, you should have a reach of a minimum of 20 inches/45cm (typically children over 9 years). You should be no more than 75 inches/190cm tall. The seat back and foot rest are adjustable to meet your size and when ordering your Trike always supply us your height, weight and knee to foot measurement. Bespoke items are available such as taller seat back, headrest and footplate riser.

You can pretty much choose any colour you like for all our products! (un-usual colours might cost a little extra). Our paint shop are usually able to match any colour and can offer candy, metallic and gloss finishes included in the price.

Our all terrain wheelchair products are highly technical and must be maintained and serviced appropriately to provide the required service life and safe operating performance. The Mountain Trike products share many features and systems of high specification mountain bikes and the maintenance and service regimes are therefore similar. If you have a simple problem with your Mountain Trike, a local bike shop should be able to help.

Our all terrain wheelchair products have been designed so that you can take it almost anywhere! Woodland walks, shopping in town, kids playground, across a muddy festival field, on a beach, in the snow and even up a mountain if you really want a challenge! The Mountain Trike and MT Evo suitable for anyone who can propel a normal manual wheelchair. Many people find it easier to push the levers than standard wheelchair hand rims - plus your hands remain clean and dry. Good finger function is required in order to operate the brake levers, but if you have limited hand function we would recommend the MT Evo which operates using a simple pivoting handle which operates the disc brakes by moving your arm inwards - we would recommend using a hand gripping aid with the MT Evo. The MT Push is manoeuvred by the riders buddy using the push handle located behind the rider, however the rider can propel using the hand-rims provided on the wheels if necessary. The eTrike can be ridden manually using the lever drives and by using the power assist by twisting the throttle when further assistance is needed. Good hand co-ordination is also required for the steering.

The designed maximum weight of a rider should not exceed 100 kg and the seat width is fixed at 17 inches.

The Mountain Trike Range was primarily designed with high performance off road capabilities as the main priority. Whilst naturally there are various practical aspects that are important for our customers, it is not always possible to meet all these needs without compromising the original product aim of All terrain performance.

We are currently reviewing the feasibility of getting our products crash tested - particularly for our push range.

We are evaluating the high costs of adapting the design, testing and certifying the Trike range for occupant travel inside a vehicle. We continue to monitor all areas of customer feedback to inform future design developments and will review this area if demand is sufficient.

Our all terrain wheelchair products don't quickly come apart for transport but do fold to a rough cube with the measurements 74cm (W) x 82cm (L) x 73cm (H)

Our products will fit in a normal sized hatchback car.

The total weight of the MT, MT Evo & MT Push is 20kg and the eTrike and ePush is 26kg and can fit in the back of most cars.

If space is even more limited, the drive units and front wheels can be removed as one self-contained item. This requires a 5mm allen key and some technical confidence but does not take too long.

The handle on the push range can be removed for transport. The handle is still linked to the Mountain Trike via the brake hoses. The ePush has additional control wires running up the handle too, but won't effect the folding.

On flat even ground our current models can be steered in a straight line or left and right with only one hand! However it would be difficult to ride over uneven ground or up hills with only a single hand. Our MT Push or ePush, all terrain attendant wheelchair might be more suitable.

When not powering the motor, the motor freewheels completely freely with no resistance, ie: there is no 'engine braking' like you would see with standard power wheelchairs.

During use, for the ePush you will find that you only really use the power for steeper hills or difficult terrain, but on easier terrain you can just push along as normal manually and the extra weight of the motor battery is barely noticeable. This is similar for the eTrike and when manually propelling.

We know that some customers are looking for safe, secure and accessible storage solutions for their Mountain Trike product and being an outdoor chair, feel outdoor storage would be a preferred option.

Asgard Bike Storage offer some great outdoor storage for bikes so are a great option if you have the space for storing your Mountain Trike.

A garage or shed is another alternative and some people do keep their Trikes in the boot of their car. Please be sure to use secure locks and check with your insurance companies to make sure they will cover your Mountain Trike.

The eTrike and ePush comes with a battery adaptor charger and can be charged whilst fitted to the eTrike, or removed to be charged indoors.

During colder months we recommend you remove and charge indoors.

It is hard to put an exact figure to this as there are many variables. It depends on weather conditions, user weight, speed, terrain, riding technique, etc, but it can be between 8 miles with heavy usage and 20 miles with light use.

The beauty of the eTrike and ePush is that if the battery does run flat you still have the option to self propel / be pushed back to your starting destination - so won't be stranded (it might just take you a little longer to get back).

We've had feedback from some of of longer distance Trikers and as yet we haven't heard of anyone's battery running completely flat!

The battery is 2kg and easily detachable with a key which unlocks it allowing you to slide it off the mount for transport or charging. The motor wheel is bolted onto the rear fork so not easy to remove for transport. Easier items to remove to aid lifting for transport are the seat cushions which surprisingly add a lot of weight to the overall Trike.

The eTrike/ePush battery has a 1 year warranty - this is in line with eBike and other mobility products.

The ePush is limited to a top speed of 3.5mph maximum.

Feedback from users was that this was the optimum speed limit required. It is also set below the legal speed limit on pavements which is 4mph.

The eTrike is limited to 8mph on its highest power setting which we feel is plenty fast enough and feels great fun! This is the legal limit for public byways.

The eTrike is legal to be used on pavements but should be used on its lowest power setting which is limited to 4mph - the legal speed on pavements.

Our weight limit is defined by certification and safety tests carried out at product development. And also during our extensive market research when defining and identifying our target market.

There is a fine balancing act with the design of any active recreational mobility product where the strength to weight ratio of the 'user' must not be limited by the weight of the device needed to meet their needs. There is a point where the modifications to the Trike that would be needed to increase the strength and durability of the drivetrain, chassis and other components would add too much extra weight and be too hard to propel for a 'user' above 100kg. In this scenario, the strength to weight ratio of the User and Device do not work out effectively from a usability, safety and comfort point of view.

The eTrike is aimed at outdoor use and can cope with most adverse weather conditions. We recommend you don't take the eTrike or ePush in the sea or deep water as this would damage the motor and electric circuits.

During colder months we recommend taking the kit indoors and charging is done indoors.
