Equipment & Clothing For Kids Useful Info
The Mountain Trike MT Push and ePush models are generally models that are very popular with families. This is mainly due to the fact that the wheelchair is controlled by the 'pusher' through the push handle where the steering and braking is located. These models enable families to truly explore off-road and outdoor places together, with air suspension and hydraulic brakes it offers comfort and safety and the Mountain Trike has unprecedented off-road performance.
The Mountain Trike company offer lots of adaptations and accessories, however for more specific requirements it is possible to work with a specialist.
This was the case for Nicola who needed certain adaptations for her daughter, Claire. Nicola purchased their MT Push through their local distributor, LC Seating who are based in Southern Ireland but Claire has lots of seating requirements so Claire approached SeatTech Enable in Ireland who were able to supply custom made adaptive seating for Claire's MT Push all terrain wheelchair.
Nicola has provided us with some really great feedback about the process and some useful information that she wanted to share incase it was helpful to others.
The photographs really show how fantastic the final finish is on their MT Push all terrain wheelchair.
"Claire is a Fun loving 15yrs old girl.
Daily Claire uses a Ki Mobility Cr Focus that we got via also LC Seating and adapted with a moulded seat system by SeatTech.
Claire is unable to weight bare and we have to hoist from A to B always.
When I first saw the Mountain Trike from a demo with LC seating I was so excited as up until that point our all terrain option had been the Independence Buggy - which as you can imagine for a 15yr old girl lacks proper support / comfort and style.
If I could wave a magic wand I would make a couple of changes to the Mountain Trike. However, I’m not a magician and wasn’t prepared to wait until every box was ticked to make it a possibility for Claire.
In an ideal world we would love it to be crash tested for travel, we are lucky we have a canal and greenway and Gaa near by for nice walks but it would be really great to be able to go further from home without having to bring two vans.
Ideally it would be slim enough to fit through standard doors at home - all Claire’s chairs (Activity chair, wheelchair and SOS comfy home chair) are all quite wide, but do fit through each door in our home. Sadly Claire's Mountain Trike only fits through her bedroom door out to the garden so we make this work for us. However, others may not have that option. Finally, a tilt reclining option would be a great help as with Claire’s other chairs we have to tilt back to be able to hoist her in so that her pelvis is in a correct position. Also having a slight tilt is always helpful in preventing pressure sores.
Sean and his team at SeatTech adjusted the Trike to allow as much tilt as possible. Without their adjustments the Mountain Trike would never have been an option for Claire.
Robert at LC Seating kindly loaned us a demo for a session with Sean and Rose at SeatTech. It was there we could see the possible changes that could be made that would make this a great outdoor wheelchair option for Claire.
Some of the seat options included a moulded two-piece seat, with 5 point harness, lap strap and foot hugging straps. As you can see the attention to detail from the adapted foot rest to the supporting table top and all finished beautifully. Even the bar’s Sean made for the SOS sun/ rain canopy have made it possible for us to go for long walks without fear of sun or rain showers especially in Ireland this year!
It’s such a solid finish and we with be forever grateful to the team in SeatTech that made this possible for Claire. Even the little straps for holding phones for music which Claire loves.
It’s such a comfortable drive for Claire and now we have a bright, fun and most importantly comfy chair for Claire.
I can now walk so fast with Claire I’ve had to attach a safety strap for my wrist which I would highly recommend for other carers for safety.
We also love the wheels, they aren't just practical but really fun - we took a photo of some lovely art in Claire’s bedroom that we got made from a local artist Lynzeeb, from Ashbourne and a local printers printed onto the clear spokes.
We are delighted with the finish and getting outdoors together is brilliant!"
What a finish and look - the seating set up really is fantastic and we are delighted that SeatTech were able to come up with such a wonderful seating system that works for Claire. The outdoors is now accessible and in style!!
