Wakehurst | Royal Botanical Gardens Kew provides all terrain wheelchairs for visitors

The stunning botanical gardens at Wakehurst, which has been managed by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew under a long-term lease agreement since 1965, have recently taken delivery of two MT Push all terrain wheelchairs. These wheelchairs will help provide an enjoyable experience for visitors with limited mobility to explore the wild botanical gardens which is home to the Millennium Seed Bank and over 500 acres of the world's plants in the heart of Sussex.

In 2019 we loaned Wakehurst an MT Push for a month for visitors to use and feedback their experiences to help establish if an all terrain wheelchair would be a good addition to their fleet of mobility vehicles.

Thankfully feedback was extremely positive and when funds had been secured Wakehurst went onto purchased 2 MT Push wheelchairs.

The MT Push wheelchair is suitable for a variety of users from children through to adults and provides a safe and comfortable ride over uneven terrain. The wheelchair has air suspension and hydraulic brakes and is extremely easy to push by the riders friend, family or carer using the push handle which is located behind the rider and how the braking and steering is operated.

Wakehurst wants everyone to have an enjoyable time when visiting and they aim to provide the best possible access and equipment - by adding the MT Push visitors now have more choice for suitable equipment for individual needs.

There are many gravel and hard surface paths around the gardens, the MT Push will make light work of the remaining garden and woodland areas and steeper slopes.

There is level or ramped access to other public spaces, disabled toilets and parking.

No need to pre-book in advance, but if you have any questions you can get in touch with Wakehurst (Monday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm):
