The HSE has denied it is sitting on land that could be used for much-needed housing despite an internal audit finding it has over 200 vacant sites. Social Democrats' deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan said it is "unconscionable" that a state agency would hold that much land in a housing crisis. “The HSE must outline why it is sitting on these properties and if any plans have been drawn up to sell or repurpose them," said Mr O'Callaghan. “It also raises the wider question of how many vacant properties owned by state bodies are lying empty around the country. “In addition to introducing a vacant property tax with teeth, the next government must carry out a full audit of any empty public buildings or offices that could be handed over to the Land Development Agency or local authorities to deliver social or affordable homes.” In response to Mr O'Callaghan's comments, the HSE said that it had 130 sites in various stages of either being sold or being reviewed for sale. 'Retained assets' It also has 104 properties that are considered retained assets. It says that these properties are vacant and have been retained for "varying reasons", including future needs. "Decisions, informed by service management are based on an understanding of current or future healthcare service needs in the relevant area. "A building may be vacated by one service with a view to refurbishment for alternative use, or a property may be maintained for future service expansion at a specific location for demographic or service requirements. They may be vacant/derelict buildings in the middle of healthcare campus." A spokesperson for the HSE said it continues to "engage with the Department of Health, Department of Housing, the Land Development Agency (LDA) and the Department of An Taoiseach in relation to its surplus assets as part of an ‘all of Government’ approach to increasing housing stock". The HSE said that it adheres to requirements around offering surplus buildings to the State. It said the HSE has disposed of 46 assets in 2023 and 2024, a significant amount of which have been transferred to local authorities and said that state stakeholders, local authorities and approved housing bodies have expressed interest in 55 of the overall total of 130 vacant HSE properties. The HSE said that it also transferred St Kevin’s in Cork City to the LDA for the provision of 266 homes and land at St Finan’s in Killarney to Kerry County Council for housing purposes.

Christmas events planned across the countyDonald Trump said Saturday that a surprise meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Florida was "very productive," days after the incoming US leader rattled Ottawa with a vow to impose tariffs on Canadian imports. Trudeau, on an unannounced visit, had been seen smiling Friday as he exited a hotel in West Palm Beach to head to a dinner at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. Afterward, Trump posted on his Truth Social website that he had had "a very productive meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau." He said the two men had discussed issues including "the Fentanyl and Drug Crisis that has decimated so many lives as a result of Illegal Immigration." He added, "Prime Minister Trudeau has made a commitment to work with us to end this terrible devastation of U.S. Families." Trudeau told journalists that he had had an "excellent conversation" with Trump, but did not elaborate. Trump has blamed Canada and Mexico for not stemming an influx of undocumented migrants and he blames them, and China, for drug problems in the United States. Trudeau's trip came after Trump sent shockwaves through the region Monday when he announced 25 percent import tariffs against Canada and Mexico and 10 percent against China if they failed to address the drug and migration problems. Such tariffs could have a devastating impact if imposed. More than three-quarters of Canadian exports, or Can$592.7 billion ($423 billion), went to the United States last year, and nearly two million Canadian jobs are dependent on trade. A Canadian government source had told AFP that Canada was considering possible retaliatory tariffs against the United States. Trudeau was the first foreign leader to meet with the US president-elect. But on Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke to Trump by phone and later ruled out a trade war with the United States. "There will not be a potential tariff war," she told reporters Thursday. Trump later said that Sheinbaum had "agreed to stop migration through Mexico... effectively closing our Southern border." But she said that there would be no closing of the border, stating: "Of course we do not agree with that." Some have suggested Trump's tariff threat was bluster, or an opening salvo in future trade negotiations. But Trudeau rejected those views when he spoke with reporters earlier in Prince Edward Island province. "Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out," Trudeau said. "There's no question about it." amc/jgc/nro/bbk/bfm
Joe Biden led US presidents and other world leaders in paying tribute Sunday to Jimmy Carter who died aged 100. “Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian,” President Biden said in a statement released by the White House. “He saved, lifted and changed the lives of people all across the globe.” To President-elect Donald Trump, Americans owe Carter “a debt of gratitude.” “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans,” he said on social media. Former president Bill Clinton, a Southern Democrat like Carter, said his predecessor had “worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world.” He added, in a joint statement with his wife and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, that Carter “lived to serve others — until the very end.” To former president George W. Bush, Carter “dignified the office. And his efforts to leave behind a better world didn’t end with the presidency.” And for former president Barack Obama, Carter “taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service.” Among other US politicians sharing their condolences, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Carter “taught us that the strength of a leader lies not in rhetoric but in action, not in personal gain but in service to others.” – ‘Lover of democracy’ – Carter “was early to recognize that protecting our shared planet and promoting global public health were vital to national security interests,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. In one of the first reactions from abroad, French President Emmanuel Macron said Carter had “been a steadfast advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable and has tirelessly fought for peace. “France sends its heartfelt thoughts to his family and to the American people,” he said. World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted Carter’s post-presidency work with the nonprofit Carter Center “saved countless lives and helped bring many neglected tropical diseases close to elimination.” Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hailed Carter as “a lover of democracy and defender of peace,” noting his pressuring of Brazil’s dictatorship to release political prisoners. “He criticized unilateral military action by superpowers and the use of killer drones,” Lula said. “He worked with Brazil to mediate conflicts in Venezuela and to help Haiti.” “He will be remembered forever as a name that defends the idea that peace is the most important condition for development.” With 2,400 staff representing 100 different nationalities, AFP covers the world as a leading global news agency. Islamabad: The Shehbaz Sharif-led Pakistan government on Sunday formed a negotiation committee to start formal talks with jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party after it threatened to give a call for civil disobedience. According to a government statement, the committee includes Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, the prime minister’s political aide Rana Sanaullah, Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Minister for Privatisation Aleem Khan, Minister for Religious Affairs Chaudhry Salik Hussain and Senator Irfan Siddiqui among others. The PTI welcomed the formation of the government committee for negotiations, calling it a “positive step”. “We consider the committee’s formation a constructive step. Meaningful dialogue based on positive intentions should be held,” PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said. He stressed that the potential talks should have a defined timeframe, adding that the dialogue must progress positively considering the sensitivity of the situation. National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had taken the lead by offering on Wednesday that he was ready to host the two sides and facilitate their parleys. He welcomed the newly constituted committee and invited the government and opposition for talks, saying “the speaker’s office is always open for members”, according to a statement issued by the NA Secretariat. The speaker called on members of both committees to meet on Monday morning, adding that he would meet them at his chambers in Parliament House. PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram said his party accepted the speaker’s invitation to meet. He said their committee will attend the meeting on Monday. Akram said the PTI founder will be informed about the progress of the meeting and he will decide whether to cancel the civil disobedience movement. The talks are being held after the PTI had threatened to give a call for civil disobedience. The party posted on X from the account of the jailed former prime minister regarding the call for civil disobedience movement, which was initially shared on December 19, stating that the campaign will be launched if the government doesn’t make progress on the party’s demands by Sunday. “I had presented two demands to the government, the release of under-trial political prisoners and the establishment of a judicial commission for a transparent investigation into the events of May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024,” the post quoted PTI founder Khan. It further stated that both of these demands “are legitimate”. “If the government fails to take any action on them by Sunday, the first phase of the civil disobedience movement — ‘remittance boycott’ — will be launched,” it said. PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram also reiterated that the civil disobedience drive would be launched tomorrow (Monday) if the party’s demands go unmet. However, the issue of civil disobedience has been apparently put on hold for some time while allowing the two sides to address the differences through political means. Khan, 72, on December 5 had warned of a civil disobedience movement from December 14 if his demands about the release of political prisoners facing trial and the formation of a judicial commission to probe the events of May 9, 2023, and November 26 this year were unmet. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s military courts sentenced 25 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to 10 years for attacking military installations during riots which erupted following the arrest of Khan in May last year, the Army announced on Saturday. On May 9, 2023, Khan’s PTI supporters allegedly attacked several military installations, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad, to vent their anger against the arrest of their party founder in a corruption case. Hundreds of suspects were arrested in the countrywide swoop and at least 103 were handed over to the military authorities for trial due to their involvement in attacks on military installations. Khan’s party has launched multiple protests through 2023 and 2024 demanding the release of their supreme leader, the latest being in November 2024. The former prime minister, currently lodged at the Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, was arrested in August last year and faces multiple cases since his government was toppled in April 2022.

He gets a full no-trade provision. After being welcomed back by Chris Young, the Rangers president of baseball operations, the pitcher said he never felt like he really left. The Rangers stayed in contact throughout the process after he declined his option Nov. 4. “Kind of listening to the market and everything, I’m extremely happy to be back. I’m glad we were we were able to make it all work out,” Eovaldi said. “We had a lot of teams reach out right away and we were in contact with most them across the league. Ultimately we were able to make it back here.” AP MLB:

But it was his checkout in the fifth leg that saw Edhouse step back and applaud. With 120 left to go, Littler hit a 20 and then two bulls-eyes in a row to win the leg. In a bid to halt the electoral decline of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, party president Mayawati has called on party members to evaluate and rectify local deficiencies. The directive followed recent bypoll losses that saw BSP candidates relegated to lower standing in multiple constituencies. Addressing a gathering of party officials, Mayawati emphasized the necessity for Dalits and Ambedkarites to consolidate their efforts for political empowerment. She criticised the prevailing use of financial and political clout to undermine democratic processes, urging the restoration of public trust in democratic institutions. Furthermore, Mayawati criticized the ruling BJP's alleged diversionary tactics and urged a focus on the pressing socio-economic issues affecting the populace. She reiterated the BSP's commitment to Dr. BR Ambedkar's vision, announcing plans to commemorate his contributions in upcoming events. (With inputs from agencies.)

Maharashtra poll results unexpected, something fishy: UddhavNew Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS): The BJP-led NDA (MahaYuti) secured a massive victory in Maharashtra, largely due to the trust voters placed in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and leadership. The schemes and promises PM Modi highlighted during his rallies resonated deeply with the electorate, contributing to the BJP's strong performance in the assembly elections. However, the success of this campaign can also be attributed to the strategic efforts of Union Ministers Bhupender Yadav and Ashwini Vaishnaw. These two leaders played a crucial role in translating the PM’s message into action, ensuring it reached every corner of Maharashtra. They worked tirelessly to organise rallies, facilitate meetings with party workers, and engage with the public directly. The key schemes shared by the Prime Minister were effectively communicated to the masses in a simplified and relatable manner, thanks to the strategic approach devised and executed by Yadav and Vaishnaw. Their efforts ensured that the BJP’s message was reflected not just in speeches but at the grassroots level, making a significant impact on the electorate ahead of the assembly elections. It is said that they were the quieter architects behind what led to the BJP-led Mahayuti’s sweeping victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections. They helped the BJP-led ruling alliance storm back to power once again. Despite remaining largely out of sight for the public during the campaign or rallies, their strategic roles were crucial in securing the party's success in the key state of Maharashtra where the Lok Sabha results in June were not good news for BJP. Both Yadav and Vaishnaw, entrusted with the roles of in-charge and co-incharge respectively for the Maharashtra elections, played a crucial behind-the-scenes role, steering the party’s efforts from the shadows. Remarkably absent from public rallies and from media glare, the duo worked diligently, skillfully and efficiently to ensure that the BJP's strategy was effectively implemented at every level. When Union Home Minister Amit Shah released the BJP’s manifesto in Mumbai on November 10, Yadav and Vaishnaw were nowhere to be seen on the dais as was expected. They were seen in the audience then. However, their absence from the spotlight did not undermine their significant influence. They continued to work in the direction of reaching out to party workers and other supporters, sharing the required guidance and strategic inputs to strengthen the BJP's position. They worked meticulously to counter the caste and social engineering of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. They were instrumental in addressing key challenges, which included countering the strategies of the opposition MVA and maintaining party unity by resolving internal dissent. Their success in Maharashtra reminds one of their earlier performances in Madhya Pradesh, where they helped the BJP win decisively despite anti-incumbency sentiment. The BJP leadership recognised their skills and talents after their successful handling of the Madhya Pradesh election, where their strategic prowess paved the way for a victory in a state where many expected the BJP to hardly sail through. In view of this track record, the BJP entrusted them with Maharashtra in the month of June, and once again, they delivered results that exceeded expectations.French President Emmanuel Macron's office has announced a new government after the previous cabinet collapsed in a historic vote prompted by fighting over the country's budget. or signup to continue reading Newly named Prime Minister Francois Bayrou put together the government that includes members of the outgoing conservative-dominated team and new figures from centrist or left-leaning backgrounds. Coming up with a 2025 budget will be the most urgent order of business. The new government enters office after months of political deadlock and pressure from financial markets to reduce France's colossal debt. No single party holds a majority in the National Assembly. Bayrou's decades of political experience are seen as key in efforts to restore stability after Marine Le Pen's far-right party helped bring down the previous government. Macron has vowed to remain in office until his term ends in 2027, but has struggled to govern since snap elections in the summer left no single party with a majority in the National Assembly. Since his appointment 10 days ago, Bayrou has held talks with political leaders from various parties in search of the right balance for the new government. Some critics on Monday were angry at Bayrou for consulting with Le Pen's far-right party, and some argue the government looks too much like the old one to win lawmakers' trust. Former Prime Minister Michel Barnier resigned this month following a no-confidence vote prompted by budget disputes in the National Assembly, leaving France without a functioning government. Le Pen played a key role in Barnier's downfall by joining her National Rally party's forces with the left to pass the no-confidence motion. Bayrou will need support from moderate legislators on the right and left to keep his government alive. Bayrou has said he supports tax hikes championed by his predecessor, but it's not clear how the new government can find the right calculation for a budget that satisfies a majority of lawmakers angry over spending cuts. Banker Eric Lombard will be finance minister, a crucial post when France is working to fulfil its promises to European Union partners to reduce its deficit, estimated to reach six per cent of its gross domestic product this year. Lombard briefly worked as an adviser to a Socialist finance minister in the 1990s. Hard-right Bruno Retailleau stays on as interior minister, with responsibility for France's security and migration policy. Sebastien Lecornu, who has been at the forefront of France's military support for Ukraine, remains defence minister, while Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who has travelled extensively in the Mideast in recent weeks, also retains his post. Among new faces are two former prime ministers. Manuel Valls will be the minister for overseas affairs, and Elisabeth Borne will take the education ministry. Appointment of unqualified individuals to U.S. leadership roles threatens us all: Letter to the Editor
Sad day for markets: Art Cashin dead at 83Biden converted the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The inmates include people who were convicted in the slayings of police, military officers and federal prisoners and guards. Others were involved in deadly robberies and drug deals. Three inmates will remain on federal death row: Dylann Roof , convicted of the 2015 racist slayings of nine Black members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina; the 2013 Boston Marathon Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ; and Robert Bowers, who fatally shot 11 congregants at Pittsburgh’s Tree of life Synagogue in 2018 , the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S history. Opponents of the death penalty lauded Biden for a decision they'd long sought. Supporters of Donald Trump , a vocal advocate of expanding capital punishment, criticized the move as an assault to common decency just weeks before the president-elect takes office. Donnie Oliverio, a retired Ohio police officer whose partner was killed by one of the men whose death sentence was commuted, said the execution of “the person who killed my police partner and best friend would have brought me no peace.” “The president has done what is right here,” Oliverio said in a statement also issued by the White House, “and what is consistent with the faith he and I share.” Heather Turner, whose mother, Donna Major, was killed in a bank robbery in South Carolina in 2017, called Biden's commutation of the killer's sentence a “clear gross abuse of power” in a Facebook post, adding that the weeks she spent sitting in court with the hope of justice were now “just a waste of time.” “At no point did the president consider the victims,” Turner wrote. “He, and his supporters, have blood on their hands.” There has always been a broad range of opinions on what punishment Roof should face from the families of the nine people killed and the survivors of the massacre at the Mother Emanuel AME Church. Many forgave him, but they can’t forget and their forgiveness doesn’t mean they don’t want to see him put to death for what he did. Felicia Sanders survived the shooting shielding her granddaughter while watching Roof kill her son, Tywanza, and her aunt, Susie Jackson. Sanders brought her bullet-torn bloodstained Bible to his sentencing and said then she can’t even close her eyes to pray because Roof started firing during the closing prayer of Bible study that night. In a text message to her lawyer, Andy Savage, Sanders called Biden’s decision to not spare Roof’s life a wonderful Christmas gift. Michael Graham, whose sister, Cynthia Hurd, was killed, told The Associated Press that Roof’s lack of remorse and simmering white nationalism in the country means he is the kind of dangerous and evil person the death penalty is intended for. “This was a crime against a race of people," Graham said. “It didn’t matter who was there, only that they were Black.” But the Rev. Sharon Richer, who was Tywanza Sanders’ cousin and whose mother, Ethel Lance, was killed, criticized Biden for not sparing Roof and clearing out all of death row. She said every time Roof’s case comes up through numerous appeals it is like reliving the massacre all over again. “I need the President to understand that when you put a killer on death row, you also put their victims' families in limbo with the false promise that we must wait until there is an execution before we can begin to heal,” Richer said in a statement. Richer, a board member of Death Penalty Action, which seeks to abolish capital punishment, was driven to tears by conflicting emotions during a Zoom news conference Monday. “The families are left to be hostages for the years and years of appeals that are to come,” Richer said. “I’ve got to stay away from the news today. I’ve got to turn the TV off — because whose face am I going to see?” Biden is giving more attention to the three inmates he chose not to spare, something they all wanted as a part of what drove them to kill, said Abraham Bonowitz, Death Penalty Action’s executive director. “These three racists and terrorists who have been left on death row came to their crimes from political motivations. When Donald Trump gets to execute them what will really be happening is they will be given a global platform for their agenda of hatred,” Bonowitz said. Two of the men whose sentences were commuted were Norris Holder and Billie Jerome Allen, on death row for opening fire with assault rifles during a 1997 bank robbery in St. Louis, killing a guard, 46-year-old Richard Heflin. Holder’s attorney, Madeline Cohen, said in an email that Holder was sentenced to death by an all-white jury. She said his case “reflects many of the system’s flaws,” and thanked Biden for commuting his sentence. “Norris’ case exemplifies the racial bias and arbitrariness that led the President to commute federal death sentences,” Cohen said. “Norris has always been deeply remorseful for the pain his actions caused, and we hope this decision brings some measure of closure to Richard Heflin’s family.” Swenson reported from Seattle. Associated Press writer Jim Salter in O'Fallon, Missouri, contributed to this report.

REVEREND Richard Coles has been left gagging as he struggled to swallow a fish eye alongside Tulisa during an I’m A Celeb trial. The Reverend is no stranger to an eating trial, after he and Maura Higgins took on a gruesome food challenge towards the start of his time on the show. And he and Irish beauty Maura did their camp mates proud during their Teddy Bear’s picnic challenge – but in an upcoming teaser , it seems the Reverend was disgusted while attempting to swallow the fish eye. Tulisa and Richard embark on a Jungle TV Dinners challenge, and tuck into several different Bushtucker courses, under the watchful eye of show hosts Ant and Dec . Courses include cleverly named ‘Love Eye-land’ and ‘Ant & Dec’s Limitless Limbs.’ Rev Richard and Tulisa desperately try to win stars for camp but it doesn’t appear to be the easiest of trials. Read More on I'm A Celeb “Richard, you must like a bit of Love Island,” says Ant, as they introduce the Love Eye-land course. Richard says he does, as Ant admitted they really liked it when Maura – who is of course also on I’m A Celeb – was on the show. “I’m afraid, though, it’s not that kind of Love Island,” Ant added, continuing: “It’s Love eye-land,” while emphasising ‘eye.’ The Reverend was presented with a very playful looking dish of fish eyes positioned as if sat around a fire pit, like Love Island’s iconic fire pit. Most read in I’m A Celebrity 2024 Reverend Richard was laughing, as Ant said: “Got a text,” and told him to “chew it properly” as the Reverend struggled to hold it down and gagged as he chewed. Meanwhile, Dec, in a Love Island manner, read out various hashtags like “fishy business ,” and “get your lips around this.” Seated on a cosy brown sofa, Ant and Dec couldn’t help but laugh as the Reverend struggled and Maura watched on. It comes as many I’m A Celeb fans were left convinced that an iconic show challenge is on the brink of return after spotting a clue. Many think that we haven't seen the last of the junkyard - a secret camp where new arrivals The Reverand Richard and Maura first went to when they arrived. i'm A Celebrity is back for its 24th series, with a batch of famous faces living in the Aussie jungle. The Sun's Jake Penkethman takes a look at the stars on the show this year.. Coleen Rooney - Arguably the most famous name in the camp, the leading WAG, known for her marriage to Wayne Rooney , has made a grand return to TV as she looks to put the Wagatha Christie scandal behind her. The Sun revealed the mum-of-four had bagged an eye-watering deal worth over £1.5million to be on the show this year making her the highest-paid contestant ever. Tulisa - The popstar and former X Factor judge has made her triumphant TV comeback by signing up to this year's I'm A Celeb after shunning TV shows for many years. Known for being a member of the trio, N-Dubz , Tulisa became a household name back in 2011 when she signed on to replace Cheryl on ITV show The X Factor in a multi-million pound deal. Alan Halsall - The actor, known for playing the long-running role of Tyrone Dobbs on ITV soap opera Coronation Street , was originally signed up to head Down Under last year but an operation threw his scheduled appearance off-course. Now he has become the latest Corrie star to win over both the viewers and his fellow celebrities. Melvin Odoom - The Radio DJ has become a regular face on TV screens after rising to fame with presenting roles on Kiss FM, BBC Radio 1 and 4Music. Melvin has already been for a spin on the Strictly dancefloor and co-hosted The Xtra Factor with Rochelle Humes in 2015 but now he is facing up to his biggest challenge yet - the Aussie jungle . GK Barry - The UK's biggest social media personality, GK, whose real name is Grace Keeling, has transformed her TikTok stardom into a lucrative career. Aside from her popular social media channels, she hosts the weekly podcast, Saving Grace, and regularly appears on ITV talk show, Loose Women . She has even gone on to endorse popular brands such as PrettyLittleThing, KFC and Ann Summers. Dean McCullough - A rising star amongst this year's bunch of celebs , Dean first achieved notability through his radio appearances on Gaydio and BBC Radio 1. He was chosen to join the BBC station permanently in 2021 and has featured prominently ever since. He has enjoyed a crossover to ITV over the past year thanks to his guest slots on Big Brother spin-off show, Late & Live. Oti Mabuse - The pro dancer has signed up to her latest TV show after making her way through the biggest programmes on the box. She originally found fame on Strictly Come Dancing but has since branched out into the world of TV judging with appearances on former BBC show The Greatest Dancer as well as her current role on ITV's Dancing On Ice . Danny Jones - The McFly star was drafted into the programme last minute as a replacement for Tommy Fury. Danny is the second member of McFly to enter the jungle , after Dougie Poynter won the show in 2011. He is also considered a rising star on ITV as he's now one of the mentors on their Saturday night talent show, The Voice , along with bandmate Tom Fletcher . Jane Moore - The Loose Women star and The Sun columnist is braving the creepy crawlies this year. The star is ready for a new challenge - having recently split from her husband . It will be Jane's first foray into reality TV with the telly favourite having always said no to reality shows in the past. Barry McGuigan - Former pro boxer Barry is the latest fighting champ to head Down Under following in the footsteps of Tony Bellew and Amir Khan . It comes after a tough few years for Irish star Barry, who lost his daughter Danika to bowel cancer . He told The Late Late Show in 2021: "She was such an intrinsic part of the family that every day we ache." Maura Higgins - The Irish TV beauty first found fame on Love Island where she found a brief connection with dancer Curtis Pritchard . Since then, she has competed on Dancing On Ice as well as hosting the Irish version of the beauty contest, Glow Up. Since last year, she has been working on building up her career in the US by being the social media correspondent and host of Aftersun to accompany Love Island USA. She even guest hosted an episode of the spin-off, Love Island Games, in place of Maya Jama last year. Rev. Richard Coles - Former BBC radio host the Rev Richard Coles is a late arrival on I’m A Celebrity , and he's ready to spill the beans on his former employer. The former Communards and Strictly star , said the BBC did not know its a**e from its elbow last year. An insider said: "Rev Coles will have a variety of tales to tell from his wild days as a pop star in the Eighties, through to performing on Strictly and his later life as a man of the cloth." The Reverand and the Love Island star were the first to face the challenge last week. The new campers had to convince the original contestants to give up their beds to win three food portions. Then GK and Coleen brought dishes to the junkyard to clean, and they went about pretending they had the rough end of the stick, making the campers feel sorry for them. In another challenge, they had to dump offal on poor Melvin. The duo summoned the best of their acting abilities to convince him that they, too, were being soaked—when, in fact, they gorged on fruit at the junk food buffet. And then they recruited The Sun's very own Jungle Jane Moore compete in a challenge together for treats. Then they got everyone feeling sorry for them as they returned to camp, but there was a twist when, unbeknownst to the rest of the camp, their makeshift ' prison ' was full of luxuries. As the stars entered the jungle, they feared the worst - but were assured by Ant And Dec that it wouldn't be as bad as they thought. They had a luxurious double bed, a hidden sofa, a gas cooker, hidden fridge door stocked with fruit smoothies and a platter and even a bathtub. Many fans have been intrigued to see a 'playfully wicked' streak develop in The Reverend, as he convinced the camp to feel sorry for him. Maura said: "I'm a good liar," to which holy man Richard said, "I will learn fast." Viewers are now convinced that, with the challenge over, we haven't seen the last of the tomfoolery. One fan took to a forum to ask, "Just wondering, with a team split coming up and the cash card scenario, will the Junkyard come into play?" "Either, winning team gets luxury in the Junkyard, or, for a twist, the worst team gets sent there, but this time, it really is the "poor" camp with all luxuries removed and only rice and beans on the menu..." In reply to this another fan said: "With teams of four it would be very cramped in there don’t you think? Only two would be able to sleep in the comfy bed or sit on the couch. I know it’s like that in the main camp but you are talking about a team ‘winning’ the luxury camp so why would two of four get the comfort?" READ MORE SUN STORIES The original person who posted this clarified: "I suggested two scenarios. Either it remains luxury for a winning team or it could revert to being a poor camp for losing camp mates, with luxuries removed, which would create more space." Another fan replied, "That sounds great. I hope it happens. It would show the campmates how they really are as people, not trying to hide themselves as they do at present. It's the best idea I have heard in ages."
FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Inter Milan beat Como 2-0 to cement third place in Serie A and close the gap on top two Atalanta and Napoli on Monday. Carlos Augusto got the opener when he headed home a corner kick in the 48th minute. Marcus Thuram scored the second in stoppage time with a potent strike into the roof of the net. It was the first time these teams have played each other in the top division since 2003 and although Inter had lost only one league game all season it struggled to impose itself on 15th-placed Como. However, it won without exerting itself and the three points were enough to take Simone Inzaghi’s men within three points of leader Atalanta and within one of Napoli. Inter has a game in hand over both clubs. Fiorentina missed a chance to go fourth when it lost at home to Udinese 2-1. The Florence club won a record eight consecutive Serie A games before losing to Bologna 1-0 on Dec. 15, and it looked to be back on track when Moises Kean converted a penalty after eight minutes to become the first Fiorentina player to reach double figures in the league since Federico Chiesa in the 2019-20 season. However, Udinese was a different prospect after the break. Lorenzo Lucca equalized with the aid of sloppy defending four minutes into the second half and then Florian Thauvin found space on the edge of the box to curl in the second eight minutes later. The result left Udinese in ninth place and Fiorentina in fifth. The match was a special one for Edoardo Bove, the Fiorentina player whose collapse with a heart issue led to the suspension of its game with Inter Milan on Dec. 1. Bove was fitted with a defibrillator implant soon after and sat on the Fiorentina bench for the first time since his collapse. He is not allowed to play but his position on the sideline alongside coach Raffaele Palladino was seen as a step towards normality for the 22-year-old midfielder. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccerNNL: Sokoto United sign three players for new seasonLENS, France (AP) — Pierre-Emile Højbjerg scored after VAR came to the rescue for Marseille to beat Lens 3-1 in the French league on Saturday. The Denmark midfielder struck in the 89th minute with a free kick awarded when Rémy Labeau-Lascary had what would have been a late equalizer ruled out for a foul by Angelo Fulgini in the buildup. The decision prompted a chorus of whistles from the home fans, who were further riled to see former Lens player Elye Wahi go on for the visitors. Valentin Rongier fired Marseille ahead early in the second half, set up by Neal Maupay, who had been played into the danger area by a good ball from Mason Greenwood. Brazilian forward Luis Henrique made it 2-0 on a counterattack in the 57th. Fulgini pulled one back from close range in the 80th after M’Bala Nzola had two efforts blocked on the line, and Labeau-Lascary thought he’d equalized in the 86th, only for Fulgini’s shove to prove decisive at the other end. The win helped Marseille consolidate third place after its third successive win away from home. Roberto De Zerbi’s team has failed to win any of its last three home games. Following a serious illness, former Lens president Gervais Martel kicked the ball in a symbolic gesture ahead of the actual kickoff. The 70-year-old was visibly moved by the reception he received from fans who displayed a giant banner thanking him for his leadership, and from players who lined up with his name on their jerseys. Fifth-place Lyon was held 1-1 at Reims in the late game. Rayan Cherki headed Lyon in front before the break, but Reims improved after it and Ivory Coast forward Oumar Diakité slid in to equalize in the 55th, keeping Reims a point behind the visitors. Benjamin Bouchouari’s strike from distance after a botched clearance was enough for Saint-Etienne to beat last-place Montpellier 1-0 at home. The former governor of Niger state, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu , has said that to protect the security personnel, Nigeria must formulate a policy that stipulates the death penalty for anyone who kills uniform personnel. He stated this at the National Institute of Security Studies (NISS), in Abuja during a graduation ceremony for members of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC), 17. According to Aliyu, the death penalty measure would encourage security personnel. As reported by Leadership on Saturday, December 7, the former governor stressed that patriotism must be taken to the highest level. PAY ATTENTION : Standing out in social media world? Easy! Shoppers rush to buy 'timeless and elegant' watch that doesn't need batteries as ultimate Christmas giftShelia Poole | (TNS) The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ATLANTA — Holidays are a time for families and friends to gather, but for older people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, it can cause so much stress and confusion that they could be in danger of what experts calls wandering. Related Articles Health | Health officials say Louisiana patient is first severe bird flu case in US Health | After pandemic explosion, California drug overdose deaths are falling fast Health | What’s behind rising autism rates: A broader definition of autism and better screening Health | Most US teens are abstaining from drinking, smoking and marijuana, survey says Health | An Alabama woman is doing well after the latest experimental pig kidney transplant “I would say around the holiday time is the biggest challenge for people with dementia,” said Kim Franklin, senior manager of programs and services at the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “Schedules are changing, people are traveling, families are coming together and friends are coming over. There’s a lot of chaos going on and that can cause a person to wander. They want to get away. It’s hard for them to process what’s happening.” The Alzheimer’s Association reports 72% of dementia patients who wander are found alive by the next day. Alerting 911 as soon as the person goes missing is critical. The odds of survival decrease as more time passes. Angel Alonso, president of Georgia Emergency Search and Recovery based in Gwinnett County, said the vast majority — between 60% and 70% — of the 30 to 40 calls the nonprofit received last year involved people with the disease. The GESAR is a volunteer-driven organization that works with law enforcement to find people who have gone missing, including children, people with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and people lost during major disasters. “We get so many Alzheimer’s calls,” said Vice President John Clark, who is also volunteer instructor with the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. For caregivers and loved ones, a relative who goes missing is devastating. Two of Clark’s grandparents had dementia, so he gravitated to search and rescue to help other families and caregivers keep their loved ones safe. He’s consulted with police departments across metro Atlanta on the best ways to find people with Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can cause people to lose their ability to recognize people and places that are familiar. According to the Alzheimer’s Association there are often warning signs that a person might wander. Six in 10 people with dementia will wander during the course of the disease. That includes people returning from a regular walk or drive later than usual. Or they may talk about fulfilling former obligations, such as going to work or talk about going home even when they’re at home. Sometimes they become restless and pace or make repetitive movements. Clark recounted one call for help when a family reported a missing relative, but they insisted she couldn’t have gone far because of a bad knee that limited her to walking no further than the mailbox. Searchers found the missing woman 7 miles from home. Even those who have never shown an interest in wandering might start without warning. Dan Goerke is fortunate. His late wife, Diane, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2012, once went missing from the car of a caregiver. The caregiver had stopped for an errand. Diane had waited alone in cars as people ran errands before. But this time, when the caregiver returned, Diane was gone but her seat belt was still fastened. “It was like she disappeared into thin air,” said Goerke, who said he doesn’t blame the caregiver. Fortunately, she was found uninjured and nearby a short time later that same day. Goerke said it’s hard for caregivers to always be on guard for wandering. “We have so many things to juggle that’s not necessarily at the top of our minds. We have to manage medications, take them to doctor’s appointments, cook meals and taking care of things day to day,” he said. Clark said when searching for someone with dementia, one of the keys is to know what the person was like before their diagnosis. Often their long-term memories are still strong. They once found a woman who walked out of her home and went to where she used to shop and to her old job, although it had closed. Recently, GESAR unveiled a new tool to search for missing people: Maverick. An 8-month-old chocolate Labrador retriever, Maverick is in training to be part of the GESAR search and research team that will track missing people, including wandering dementia patients in metro Atlanta. In cases involving children and people with dementia, a dog’s personality can also be an asset. Labs like Maverick are friendly and affectionate, not imposing or threatening like some other breeds — and less likely to scare the person who is lost. Canines can be used in searches in both rural and urban areas. “He’s an asset,” said Maverick’s handler, Carmen Alonso. “His nose can pick up odors and track where a person has been that we might not think to go that direction.” At the Cobb County Police Department, Public Information Officer Sgt. Eric Smith said if dogs are needed to search for a wanderer they call the sheriff’s department, which has bloodhounds. “They’re not apprehension dogs so there’s little or no likelihood of a bite,” he said. Technology can also help, Smith said. Searchers can use drones and families can install technology on a person’s car to help locate it or use other kinds of trackable devices including on their phone. “We get so many Alzheimer’s calls,” said Clark, who is also a volunteer instructor with the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Most cases they’ve worked on have had favorable results, according to the Georgia Emergency Search and Recovery organization. No two searches are the same, said Sgt. Jeremy Blake of the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office. “When responding to calls for a missing person, the response is different than that of a fleeing suspect,” he wrote in an email. “The K-9s that are used to track missing persons are not trained in the apprehension of suspects. ... Often times, if the K-9 cannot locate the missing person, they can provide officers with a more accurate direction of travel than they may previously had.” Nearly 7 million U.S. residents age 65 and older were living with Alzheimer’s according to the most recent Facts & Figures report . Of those, more than 188,000 Georgians ages 65 and older also have been diagnosed with the disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association Georgia Chapter. There is a better chance of being found in urban environments because of a higher probability of a “good Samaritan” stepping in. Wanderers may give no forewarning. Often those with memory issues wander away during activities they’ve done safely in the past, such as shopping or sitting on a front porch. Some people who still drive can become disoriented and drive for miles away from home. According to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, on average, half the calls for missing persons involve the elderly or someone with disabilities. Call 911 as soon as possible. Have a photograph available for first responders and an article of clothing to provide a scent for search dogs. Sharing what the missing person liked to do in prior years can be a key: Did they have a job they went to every day? Did they like to fish or go to a certain spot? Searchers will need to know the last time the person was seen to help determine how far a person might have wandered. By MICHAEL R. SISAK and JENNIFER PELTZ NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers urged a judge again Friday to throw out his hush money conviction, balking at the prosecution’s suggestion of preserving the verdict by treating the case the way some courts do when a defendant dies. They called the idea “absurd.” Related Articles National Politics | Unique among ‘Person of the Year’ designees, Donald Trump gets a fact-check from Time magazine National Politics | Trump wants to turn the clock on daylight saving time National Politics | Ruling by a conservative Supreme Court could help blue states resist Trump policies National Politics | A nonprofit leader, a social worker: Here are the stories of the people on Biden’s clemency list National Politics | Nancy Pelosi hospitalized after she ‘sustained an injury’ on official trip to Luxembourg The Manhattan district attorney’s office is asking Judge Juan M. Merchan to “pretend as if one of the assassination attempts against President Trump had been successful,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in a blistering 23-page response. In court papers made public Tuesday, District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office proposed an array of options for keeping the historic conviction on the books after Trump’s lawyers filed paperwork earlier this month asking for the case to be dismissed. They include freezing the case until Trump leaves office in 2029, agreeing that any future sentence won’t include jail time, or closing the case by noting he was convicted but that he wasn’t sentenced and his appeal wasn’t resolved because of presidential immunity. Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove reiterated Friday their position that the only acceptable option is overturning his conviction and dismissing his indictment, writing that anything less will interfere with the transition process and his ability to lead the country. The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined comment. It’s unclear how soon Merchan will decide. He could grant Trump’s request for dismissal, go with one of the prosecution’s suggestions, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump’s parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court, or choose some other option. In their response Friday, Blanche and Bove ripped each of the prosecution’s suggestions. Halting the case until Trump leaves office would force the incoming president to govern while facing the “ongoing threat” that he’ll be sentenced to imprisonment, fines or other punishment as soon as his term ends, Blanche and Bove wrote. Trump, a Republican, takes office Jan. 20. “To be clear, President Trump will never deviate from the public interest in response to these thuggish tactics,” the defense lawyers wrote. “However, the threat itself is unconstitutional.” The prosecution’s suggestion that Merchan could mitigate those concerns by promising not to sentence Trump to jail time on presidential immunity grounds is also a non-starter, Blanche and Bove wrote. The immunity statute requires dropping the case, not merely limiting sentencing options, they argued. Blanche and Bove, both of whom Trump has tabbed for high-ranking Justice Department positions, expressed outrage at the prosecution’s novel suggestion that Merchan borrow from Alabama and other states and treat the case as if Trump had died. Blanche and Bove accused prosecutors of ignoring New York precedent and attempting to “fabricate” a solution “based on an extremely troubling and irresponsible analogy between President Trump” who survived assassination attempts in Pennsylvania in July and Florida in September “and a hypothetical dead defendant.” Such an option normally comes into play when a defendant dies after being convicted but before appeals are exhausted. It is unclear whether it is viable under New York law, but prosecutors suggested that Merchan could innovate in what’s already a unique case. “This remedy would prevent defendant from being burdened during his presidency by an ongoing criminal proceeding,” prosecutors wrote in their filing this week. But at the same time, it wouldn’t “precipitously discard” the “meaningful fact that defendant was indicted and found guilty by a jury of his peers.” Prosecutors acknowledged that “presidential immunity requires accommodation” during Trump’s impending return to the White House but argued that his election to a second term should not upend the jury’s verdict, which came when he was out of office. Longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution . Other world leaders don’t enjoy the same protection. For example, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on trial on corruption charges even as he leads that nation’s wars in Lebanon and Gaza . Trump has been fighting for months to reverse his May 30 conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records . Prosecutors said he fudged the documents to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier, which Trump denies. In their filing Friday, Trump’s lawyers citing a social media post in which Sen. John Fetterman used profane language to criticize Trump’s hush money prosecution. The Pennsylvania Democrat suggested that Trump deserved a pardon, comparing his case to that of President Joe Biden’s pardoned son Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of tax and gun charges . “Weaponizing the judiciary for blatant, partisan gain diminishes the collective faith in our institutions and sows further division,” Fetterman wrote Wednesday on Truth Social. Trump’s hush money conviction was in state court, meaning a presidential pardon — issued by Biden or himself when he takes office — would not apply to the case. Presidential pardons only apply to federal crimes. Since the election, special counsel Jack Smith has ended his two federal cases , which pertained to Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and allegations that he hoarded classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. A separate state election interference case in Fulton County, Georgia, is largely on hold. Trump denies wrongdoing in all. Trump had been scheduled for sentencing in the hush money case in late November. But following Trump’s Nov. 5 election victory, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed the former and future president’s sentencing so the defense and prosecution could weigh in on the future of the case. Merchan also delayed a decision on Trump’s prior bid to dismiss the case on immunity grounds. A dismissal would erase Trump’s conviction, sparing him the cloud of a criminal record and possible prison sentence. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted criminal to be elected to the office.
Arguments over whether Luigi Mangione is a 'hero' offer glimpse into unusual American momentEMPOLI, Italy (AP) — Scotland international Che Adams scored from almost the halfway line as Torino ended a run of poor form to win at Empoli 1-0 in Serie A on Friday. Adams replaced Antonio Sanabria in the 64th minute and made his mark almost immediately. With 70 gone, he spotted the Empoli goalkeeper off his line and lobbed the ball over his head from inside the center circle. The goal ended his personal eight-game drought in spectacular fashion, and will ease pressure on coach Paolo Vanoli. The Turin club was unbeaten in its first five league games and topped the table for a time. But it has won only one of 10 games since, back in late October. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) objected to efforts to speedily pass the bill, arguing that it was a “threat to national security” and was “the biggest giveaway to the liberal press in American history.” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), the author of the Senate version of the Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying Act, or Press Act , had sought unanimous consent on the floor today to clear the bill. That is a legislative maneuver to pass legislation without a roll call, unless a lawmaker objects. The Press Act passed the House in a unanimous vote earlier this year. Wyden indicated that he would continue to talk to Cotton to try to resolve his concerns. The bill “protects from disclosure any information identifying a source, as well as any records, contents of a communication, documents, or information obtained or created by journalists in the course of their work.” The bill also bars government from demanding record that third parties — like telecommunications and social media companies — hand over records that would reveal journalists’ contacts. The exceptions to the journalists’ protection are when such information is needed to prevent terrorism or imminent violence. Although the Press Act has bipartisan sponsors and support, President-elect Donald Trump weighed in against it last month, writing on Truth Social , “REPUBLICANS MUST KILL THIS BILL!” Cotton argued that the PRESS Act would turn journalists into “a protected class, free to hold, share and publish highly classified and dangerous information that no other American is allowed to possess.” The Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press has said that the bill “is a reasonable, common-sense measure to preserve the free flow of information to the public, as evidenced by its broad bipartisan support and the fact that 49 states and the District of Columbia have similar protections. All reflect the reality that the press cannot fulfill its constitutionally recognized watchdog role without some safeguard for confidential source identities and sensitive newsgathering material. Congress must step in to provide a durable shield at the federal level.” Backers of the bill also said that it would be an important protection for reporters on the right as well as the left, given the prevalence of conservative media outlets that engage in aggressive investigative reporting. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that the “the press keeps governments accountable to the people, exposes abuse and informs people about what’s happening in government. But if government can unduly harass the press, or when leaders smear journalists as enemies of the people and when there are too few protections for journalists, our democracy is at the very real risk of eroding away.” He said that the bill was “more important now than ever before when we’ve heard some in the previous administration talk about going after the press in one way or another.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Democrats and Republicans agreed on at least one thing before November’s election: California would play a central role in determining control of the U.S. House. Indeed it did. Democrat Adam Gray's come-from-behind victory over Republican Rep. John Duarte in a Central Valley farm-belt district Tuesday — the final House contest decided this year — gave Democrats their third pick-up of a GOP-held seat in the state, a small victory in a tough year for Democrats nationally. While Democratic wins narrowed the gap in the House, Republicans held their ground in two other toss-up contests that helped the GOP defend its fragile majority in Washington. Republicans won 220 House seats this election cycle , with Democrats holding 215 seats. Despite falling short of a majority, Democrats stressed that the party will gain seats next year, leaving the chamber even more closely divided. “Netting three seats was a very big deal,” Rep. Pete Aguilar, the third-ranking Democrat in the chamber, who lives in Redlands, east of Los Angeles, said in Washington. Democratic enthusiasm was tempered, however, by turnout figures that lagged the 2020 presidential election in the heavily Democratic state, even with Kamala Harris leading the Democratic ticket in her home state. Also, Republicans made incremental gains in the state Legislature. Voters overwhelmingly endorsed a ballot proposal that makes shoplifting a felony for repeat offenders again and increases penalties for some drug charges amid frustration over retail crimes, a proposal opposed by some Democrats. The election showed Democrats will need to pay closer attention to issues like crime and the cost of living, even in a state where the party holds every statewide office and dominates the Legislature and congressional delegation, Claremont McKenna College political scientist Jack Pitney said. In the House, Democrats “were hoping that California would push them over the top to gain a majority. But their gains elsewhere were not strong enough,” Pitney added, pointing to GOP wins in North Carolina. Gray won by a margin of less than 200 votes, with election officials reporting Tuesday all ballots had been counted. Duarte captured the seat in 2022 when he defeated Gray by one of the closest margins in the country, 564 votes. He was often listed among the most vulnerable House Republicans given that narrow margin of victory in a district with a Democratic tilt — about 11 points over registered Republicans. Gray said in a statement: “We always knew that this race would be as close as they come, and we’re expecting a photo finish this year, too.” In other Democratic House gains, first-time candidate Derek Tran ousted Republican Rep. Michelle Steel in a Southern California district anchored in Orange County, while Democrat George Whitesides toppled Republican Rep. Mike Garcia is a district north of Los Angeles. In a district east of Los Angeles, Republican Rep. Ken Calvert again held off Democrat Will Rollins in a repeat of their 2022 contest. And Republican Rep. David Valadao kept his grip on a farm-belt seat, despite its heavy Democratic registration edge. The outcome will leave Republicans with nine of the state's 52 U.S. House seats next year. Although California is often seen as a liberal monolith, a string of House districts has proved volatile in recent elections, spotlighting their importance to both parties. Democrats snatched seven seats from Republicans in 2018, then Republicans seized four from Democrats in 2020. In the 2022 elections, Republicans gained one seat, from 11 to 12, while Democrats dropped to 40 seats from 42, after California lost a House seat in reapportionment after the 2020 census. Overall, the state dropped to 52 districts from 53. The state played a pivotal role in securing the gavel for Republicans in 2022 and installing Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield as speaker . Impressive news from a high-profile business partner was a major reason for the stock price pop experienced by SoundHound AI ( SOUN 8.38% ) on Thursday. The artificial intelligence (AI) company was up by nearly 9% in late-session trading, a rate that was easily topping the 0.8% rise of the S&P 500 ( ^GSPC 0.53% ) . Follow the leader That news was the quarterly results posted after market hours Wednesday by leading graphics card processor company Nvidia , whose cutting-edge hardware products are widely used in the burgeoning AI industry . Happily for that industry -- not to mention its shareholders -- Nvidia did very well in the third quarter of its fiscal 2025. It managed to nearly double its already considerable revenue on a year-over-year basis, to more than $35 billion, and somehow top that with a 103% improvement in per-share net income (which hit $0.81). Both figures were comfortably above the consensus analyst estimates. This positively affects SoundHound AI in two important ways. One, it clearly illustrates that there's more than enough demand for AI functionalities of all kinds to sustain companies supplying the hardware that makes the tech possible. Second, and more directly, Nvidia is an investor in SoundHound AI; as of Sept. 30, the former company owned more than 1.7 million shares of the latter. Agents of change That happy development with Nvidia's results wasn't the only reason the market was sweet on SoundHound AI Thursday -- the company had some good news of its own to report. That morning, it said in a press release that its AI "agents" had assisted one of its clients, insurer Apivia Courtage, in helping more than 100,000 customer inquiries. SoundHound AI added that this had reduced by 20% the number of inbound requests handled by Apivia's customer relations specialists. Both of these developments were unambiguously positive for SoundHound AI, and should boost the company's profile. Just now, it isn't considered one of the more impactful or influential AI businesses on the market.Global DJ Software Market Size, Share and Forecast By Key Players-Serato, Pioneer, Atomix VirtualDJ, Native Instruments, MixvibesAP News Summary at 5:18 a.m. ESTIs Enron back? Buying or gifting a smart security cam with handy AI technology is a great idea right now thanks to high camera resolutions and holiday deals on Black Friday, Cyber Monday and beyond . But I know many of these cams come with high prices -- so is that sticker shock expected? Some home cameras are definitely priced higher than they should be. Let's make this easier and break down the best 2024 home security cam costs depending on what you're looking for, from the cheapest level to how much you should stretch your wallet for high-end models. Read more : Best Home Security Cameras Without a Subscription Cheap security cams that still get the job done: Around $30 TP-Link's Tapo brand is one of the most reliable budget home security options. If you're into big value for minimal cost, expect to pay around $30 for a budget cam . These cams are usually wired and indoor models , but are still packed with smart features including object detection, video storage options, two-way audio, night vision and voice assistant support. To see what I mean, take a look at my favorite model, the Tapo C210 pan/tilt cam with 2K resolution , usually available between $20 and $30. Or the Blink Mini 2 , which has outdoor options with an added cable and is available between $40 and $60 . Midrange security cams for high-quality views: $100 Eufy's cam can keep an eye on large spaces. If you want a solid all-purpose security camera with a good resolution and plenty of smart home support, set your budget for about $100. That's right in the range for the Google Nest Indoor Cam , Eufy's high-resolution pan/tilt S350 , or the Blink Outdoor 4 model with its extra-long battery life. These cameras offer ways to manage all types of home monitoring, often with 2K or 4K resolutions, wireless mounting options, wide fields of view and lots of third-party support, including compatibility with existing security systems . And when big deals come along , their prices tend to drop well below $100. High-end security cams with all bells and whistles: $200 This Arlo Pro cam is useful outdoors or inside. A single high-end security camera shouldn't cost you more than $200 in 2024. In that echelon we include many outdoor-ready models like our top pick the Arlo Pro 5S 2K with a retail price of $180 , or the Google Nest Video Doorbell battery model, also at $180. This 4K Lorex spotlight cam is an excellent outdoor pick available at $200, and Arlo's Go 2 is an ideal LTE cam for distant places without Wi-Fi that's listed for $250 but has frequent discounts that bring it below $200. Or you could choose a portable, indoor/outdoor model like the Ring Stick Up Cam Pro . These cameras offer better smart home support, smarter AI object detections, extras like spotlights , sturdy construction for outdoor use even in bad winters , and other benefits. They may also be bundled with solar panels, Wi-Fi hubs for adding more cameras later or other important components for establishing more home security in the future. Security cam local storage options: $0 to $20 If you want to avoid monthly subscription fees altogether to save even more on home security cameras, look for cameras that skip video storage subscriptions and instead offer local storage options. Brands like Lorex, Eufy and Tapo are known for this kind of local storage, which is typically a microSD card slot or a hub with a USB drive slot. You won't have to pay much more for this such built-in storage. Lorex, for example, has a 2K camera with an included 16GB microSD card at no extra charge. But if you do have to pay for a card or want to upgrade your storage, you can find a large 256GB microSD card for only $25 (less on sale), an acceptable price to ditch subscriptions. ADT's increased integration with Nest and Yale is nice to see, but costs remain an issue with the long-time security brand. Security cam subscriptions: $5 to $10 per month Some camera brands benefit immensely from a subscription service, including Arlo, Blink and Ring. If you don't mind paying a monthly fee to enable many extra features, including cloud video storage and object recognition, expect to pay between $5 to $10 a month for most subscriptions. Some are a little lower (Blink's is currently around $3 per month), but basic subscriptions shouldn't go beyond $10, especially for a single cam. You can find subscription tiers up to to $20 or $30, but at that point the services start including 24/7 emergency assistance or professional home monitoring services , which are nice but not necessary, particularly if you don't already have a full security system. My advice? Look for plans below $10 when starting out, then explore other options if you want to expand your security tech in the future. NEOM green hydrogen project to supply 10% of global demand, Alkhorayef saysCathie Wood is the head of money management firm Ark Invest and is best known on Wall Street for her bullish stances on emerging technologies in artificial intelligence (AI) and genomics. One of Wood's higher-conviction investment themes resides in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Not surprisingly, Ark's top EV position is Tesla . Outside of EV cars, Wood also is optimistic about another pocket of the electric transportation realm, called electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Across three of Ark's exchange-traded funds (ETFs), the company owns a position in eVTOL leader Archer Aviation ( ACHR -1.32% ) . Archer shares have soared by 82% in 2024, and its current share price of $11 is near its highest levels in three years. While these moves could suggest that investors have missed out, I see an interesting catalyst for Archer going into 2025. I'm going to explore a new partnership that Archer recently formed and outline why this particular deal could serve as a major tailwind for the company as President-elect Donald Trump and his administration assume power in Washington. Archer's stealthy opportunity For much of its history, Archer has been seen as a potential airborne alternative to traditional ride-hailing services such as Uber or Lyft . Unlike premium services offered by the likes of Blade Air Mobility , Archer's primary use case has been focused on decongesting areas that experience abnormally high levels of traffic (i.e., cities) by offering an alternative platform to taxis or subways. However, in this video, Archer Chief Executive Officer Adam Goldstein explains an under-the-radar opportunity for the company in the public sector. Why Archer could soar under President-elect Trump As part of Archer's defense ambitions, the company partnered with autonomous systems company Anduril . Anduril is the brainchild of Palmer Luckey, a serial entrepreneur most famous for selling his virtual reality start-up, Oculus, to Meta Platforms . Anduril develops a series of new-age rockets and drone technologies. I think the partnership between Anduril and Archer makes a lot of sense, given the overlap these companies have in the aviation sector. What makes Archer a particularly nice fit with Anduril is that the company's eVTOL aircraft emit very little sound, making them an attractive vehicle choice during military stealth operations. And while such an opportunity in the public sector may seem niche, keep in mind that the estimated market for stealth operations and military robotics is expected to reach more than $100 billion by early next decade. When speaking about the incoming administration, Goldstein said he thinks Trump could be "very positive" and a "big benefit" to companies such as Archer as it pertains to regulatory approvals needed to further commercialize the business, as well as get more involved with public sector operations. Is Archer stock a buy right now? One of the hardest things to do in investing is making the distinction between a real business and an alluring narrative. I see Archer as smack in the middle of this divide. Although the opportunities for Archer are intriguing, the company is in a pre-revenue state. And although it's signed billions of dollars worth of purchase orders, the company has not yet scaled. Could Trump pave the way for more streamlined regulatory frameworks and speed up Archer's commercialization timeline? Maybe, but it's not entirely known yet if an issue like this is anywhere near the top of the priority list for the new administration. Moreover, while Archer's use cases in the public sector make a lot of sense, it could be years before its aircraft are used anywhere. I am curious and ever-so-slightly cautiously optimistic that Archer could emerge as a winner during the next four years. However, I think an investment in Archer is best for those who can afford a small allocation in their portfolio for speculative opportunities. If that type of risk is too much for you, I'd encourage you to move on and identify more mature opportunities in the EV or defense sectors.

NoneMore options are available to area residents calling for emergency help, including live streaming video, text messaging and text translation. The Hastings Police Department Tuesday announced the launch of Prepared Live. Prepared Live is a program that enables the 911 Dispatch Center to livestream videos, text message, and translate text messages from mobile callers in real time. The addition to the dispatchers’ current technology will improve law enforcement’s ability to effectively and efficiently respond to both emergency and non-emergency calls for service in the area. Participation in live streaming video during a call is voluntary, as consent of the caller is required. If the caller consents, they will receive a livestream link via text from the dispatcher, enabling them to activate live video so the dispatcher can see what they see. The new technology can provide critical information to dispatchers and first responders before arriving at a scene. For non-emergency situations, citizens can text the Hastings 911 Center at 402-461-2364 to report something that does not require immediate law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical service response. Non-English speaking citizens can text the Hastings 911 Center in their native language and the system will translate it so dispatchers can quickly assist them.Rob Cross hails Scots manager with 'no bulls***' style for saving his darts careerCentury-old department store Nordstrom has agreed to be acquired and taken private by Nordstrom family members and a Mexican retail group in a $6.25 billion deal with the industry being squeezed by discount chains and other competition. LANDOVER, Md. — Austin Seibert missed his second extra point of the game with 21 seconds left after Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin connected on an 86-yard touchdown, Juanyeh Thomas returned the ensuing onside kick attempt for a touchdown and the Dallas Cowboys pulled out a 34-26 victory Sunday that extended the Washington Commanders’ skid to three games. Seibert, who missed the previous two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt following a low snap. Thomas then took the kick back 43 yards as the Cowboys (4-7) ended their losing streak at five in improbable fashion. Part of that was the play of backup Cooper Rush, who threw for 247 yards and two TDs in his third start in place of starter Dak Prescott. Part was also the defense forcing two turnovers, as Chauncey Golston ripped the ball out of Brian Robinson Jr.’s hands for what was called an interception of Daniels in the second quarter, and Donovan Wilson stripped John Bates midway through the fourth. KaVonte Turpin provided the fireworks with a spinning, 99-yard kickoff return TD seconds after Daniels found Zach Ertz in the end zone and scored on a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to three with 3:02 left. In the final three minutes alone, the Commanders (7-5) scored 10 points and allowed Thomas’ TD. All that after the score was 10-9 through three quarters before madness ensued. CHIEFS 30, PANTHERS 27 CHARLOTTE — Patrick Mahomes threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns, Spencer Shrader kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired and Kansas City beat Carolina to reach double-digit wins for the 10th straight season. Noah Gray caught two TD passes as the Chiefs (10-1) bounced back from last week’s 30-21 loss at Buffalo and won at the buzzer yet again in a season of narrow escapes. DeAndre Hopkins also had a touchdown catch for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, who scored on their first five possessions. Bryce Young finished 21 of 35 for 262 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers (3-8), who had their two-game winning streak snapped. David Moore had six receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. Trailing 27-19, Young completed a fourth-down pass to Adam Thielen to move the chains, then went deep for the veteran receiver, who drew a pass-interference penalty on Chamarri Conner. That set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Chuba Hubbard. INDIANAPOLIS — Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for two scores and David Montgomery added a third touchdown run, leading Detroit to a victory over Indianapolis. Gibbs finished with 21 carries for 90 yards as the Lions (10-1) extended their league-high winning streak to nine straight. Detroit has its been 11-game record since the franchise’s inaugural season in 1934. Jared Goff continued his sensational season, too, completing 26 of 36 throws for 269 yards. The Colts (5-7) lost their second straight home game and for the fourth time in their past five games. Anthony Richardson was 11 of 28 with 172 yards while rushing 10 times for 61 yards. While Indy managed to hold the NFL’s highest-scoring offense largely in check Sunday, it was doomed by its inability to finish drives with touchdowns. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Baker Mayfield catapulted into the end zone on a spectacular 10-yard scramble for one of Tampa Bay’s four rushing touchdowns, and the Buccaneers beat the Giants and new starting quarterback Tommy DeVito, snapping a four-game losing streak and extending New York’s skid to six. The Giants’ decisions this week to bench and then release quarterback Daniel Jones did nothing to help the NFL’s lowest-scoring offense. DeVito threw for 189 yards, mostly in the second half with New York well on its way to its sixth straight loss at home, where it is winless. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers dominated in every phase in a near-perfect perfect performance that featured TD runs of 1 yard by Sean Tucker, 6 yards by Bucky Irving and 1 yard by Rachaad White. After recent losses to the Ravens, 49ers and Chiefs, Tampa Bay (5-6) moved within one game of idle Atlanta in the NFC South. Tampa Bay scored on five of its on first six possessions to open a 30-0 lead, and none was more exciting than Mayfield’s TD run with 12 seconds left in the first half. On a second-and-goal from the 10, he avoided pressure and went for the end zone. He was hit by Cor’Dale Flott low and Dru Phillips high around the 2-yard line, and he was airborne when he crossed the goal line. The ball came loose when he hit the turf but he jumped up and flexed — seemingly mocking DeVito’s go-to celebration — as the Bucs took a 23-0 lead. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Tua Tagovailoa threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns, including two scores to running back De’Von Achane, and Miami routed New England. The Dolphins (5-6) have a thin margin for error the rest of the season but have kept themselves afloat with a three-game winning streak. With their win at New England (3-9) in Week 5, the Dolphins have swept their division rivals in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1999-2000. Tagovailoa, who moved to 7-0 in his career against New England, entered the game with a league-high 73.4% completion rate and went 29 for 40. Backup Skylar Thompson replaced Tagovailoa with about 11 minutes left in what was already a blowout, but a bad handoff on his first play resulted in a fumble that was recovered by cornerback Christian Gonzalez and returned 63 yards for a touchdown. It cut New England’s deficit to 31-15, and Tagovailoa returned the next drive. HOUSTON — Will Levis threw for 278 yards and his 70-yard touchdown pass to Chig Okonkwo put Tennessee on top in the fourth quarter and the Titans held on for a win over the Texans. Okonkwo grabbed a short pass and rumbled for the touchdown to put the Titans (3-8) up 30-27 with 91⁄2 minutes remaining. Safety Eric Murray missed a tackle that would have stopped him near midfield. The Texans (7-5) had a chance to tie it with less than two minutes remaining, but Ka’imi Fairbairn’s 28-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide left. He fell to the ground after the miss before getting up and slamming his helmet on the field. Titans coach Brian Callahan held both hands in the air and smiled after watching the miss that allowed his team to win on a day it had three turnovers. The Texans forced a three-and-out, but couldn’t move the ball after that and Harold Landry sacked C.J. Stroud in the end zone for a safety to make it 32-27 and allow Tennessee to snap a two-game skid. CHICAGO (AP) — Sam Darnold threw for 90 of his 330 yards in overtime to set up Parker Romo’s game-ending 29-yard field goal, and Minnesota outlasted Chicago after giving up 11 points in the final 22 seconds of regulation. Darnold threw two touchdown passes, Jordan Addison caught eight passes for a career-high 162 yards and a touchdown, and T.J. Hockenson had 114 yards receiving for the Vikings (9-2), who remained one game behind Detroit in the rugged NFC North. Caleb Williams threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns for the Bears (4-7), who lost their fifth straight. Minnesota appeared to have the game in hand, leading 27-16 with 1:56 left after Romo kicked a 26-yard field goal. But the Bears weren’t finished. Deandre Carter made up for a muffed punt that led to a touchdown in the third quarter with a 55-yard kickoff return to the 40. Williams took it from there, capping an eight-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Keenan Allen. A 2-point conversion pass to DJ Moore made it 27-24 with 22 seconds remaining. The Bears recovered the onside kick and Williams hit Moore over the middle for a 27-yard gain to the 30 before spiking the ball. Cairo Santos made a 48-yard field goal as time expired.LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani is keeping elite company. The Japanese superstar caps 2024 by winning The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for the third time, tying him with basketball great Michael Jordan. He trails only four-time winners Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods and LeBron James. "I'm very honored," Ohtani said through translator Matt Hidaka in an exclusive interview with the AP. "Obviously all the hard work has paid off. Maybe next year, I'll get the award again." In balloting by 74 sports journalists from the AP and its members, Ohtani received 48 votes. He previously won the award in 2023 and 2021, when he was with the Angels. "Growing up in Japan, I did follow Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods," he said. "I would see their accolades and how they were successful in the United States." The AP honor has been given out since 1931. Golfer Babe Didrikson won six times, the most by a man or woman. Swimmer Léon Marchand of France, who won four gold medals at the Paris Olympics, was second with 10 votes in balloting announced Monday. Golfer Scottie Scheffler, whose victories this year included the Masters and an Olympic gold medal, was third with nine. The AP Female Athlete of the Year will be announced Tuesday. Moving from the beleaguered Los Angeles Angels to the powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers, Ohtani won his third Most Valuable Player award and first in the National League, led his new team to its eighth World Series championship and created Major League Baseball's 50/50 club by hitting 54 home runs and stealing 59 bases. Ohtani signed a then-record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers in December 2023. Already a two-way superstar, he embellished his reputation even further despite not pitching all season while he rehabilitated from a second major right elbow surgery he had in September 2023. Ohtani went wild on offense, making every at-bat a must-see moment. The 6-foot-4 designated hitter batted a career-high .310 while easily surpassing his previous career highs in home runs and stolen bases. In September, he reached the previously unheard of 50/50 mark in a performance for the ages. Against the Miami Marlins in Florida, Ohtani went 6 for 6 with three homers, 10 RBIs, two stolen bases and 17 total bases. "It wouldn't shock me if he went 60/60 and 20 wins a year from now," Brad Ausmus, who managed the Angels in 2019 during Ohtani's second season in Anaheim, said recently. "This guy is the greatest athlete to ever play the sport of baseball and there's not a close second." Ohtani said he knew the Dodgers' franchise record for most homers in a season was 49. His previous best was 46, set in 2021. "I kind of wanted to get over that bar," he said. "I was pleasantly surprised I was able to pass that record." Ohtani carried the Dodgers offensively during the regular season, and he stayed healthy until Game 2 of the World Series. He injured his left shoulder trying to steal second base against the New York Yankees and finished the Series playing hurt. He underwent surgery a few days after the Dodgers celebrated their championship in early November. "I don't have full range of motion yet, but it feels a lot better," he told the AP. "There's no pain. There's obviously still a little bit of tightness, but slowly but surely it's getting better." Ohtani recently received an updated rehab schedule, and he's focused on the near-term. "It's the small steps that I think are very important to get me to the ultimate goal, which is to just get back healthy," he said. Ohtani is also throwing in the 70 mph range, which is typical for pitchers early in the offseason. "I'm going to continue to ramp up slowly," he said. The Dodgers' rotation for next season is in flux, and Ohtani is waiting to see how it shakes out. "We may go with a five-man rotation with a bullpen (game), which is what we did a lot during this season or we may have a six-man rotation," he said. "But it's all about balancing out when we can get rest and recuperate. We'll see where that takes us along the playoff chase. I've got to obviously pace myself, but again that situation will guide us to how we get there." The Dodgers open the 2025 season in Japan, where Ohtani is even more closely watched. "My personal goal is to be fully healthy by the time the opening games do start," he said. "To be able to pitch and hit would be great, but the situation will kind of guide itself." Each time Ohtani comes to the plate or steps on the mound, there's great pressure and expectation for him to perform spectacular feats. "I just go out there and try to stay within myself," he said. "I can only control what I can control and that's where you trust your teammates. The guys behind me, you trust they're going to make the plays for you. I don't really try to overthink it." Ohtani generated big bucks for the Dodgers off the field, too. Fans traveled from Japan in droves to see him play around the U.S. At Dodger Stadium, they paid extra for tours of baseball's third-oldest venue narrated by Japanese-speaking guides and to be on the field during pre-game batting practice. A majority of the fans bought Ohtani-branded merchandise, especially his No. 17 jersey. Ohtani's presence also helped the Dodgers land a bevy of new Japanese sponsors. Because Ohtani prefers to speak Japanese and use an interpreter with the media, he is shrouded in a bit of mystique. Asked before his first postgame series if he was nervous, he dropped a one-word answer in English: "Nope," which drew laughter. Japanese-born Dodgers manager Dave Roberts observed Ohtani's behind-the-scenes interactions with his teammates, coaches and staff, and came away impressed. "I really do believe that as good of a ballplayer as he is, he's a much better person. He's very kind, considerate, he cares," Roberts told the AP. "I'm just proud of any fame or glory or award that he receives because he just does it in such a respectful and humble way." Ohtani relishes his privacy and rarely shares details about himself off the field. That's why his February announcement via Instagram that he had wed Mamiko Tanaka, a former basketball player, stunned his new teammates and the rest of the world. The following month, after the Dodgers arrived in South Korea to open the season, he was enveloped in scandal when his longtime interpreter and friend, Ippei Mizuhara, was fired by the Dodgers after being accused of using millions of dollars of Ohtani's money to place bets with an illegal bookmaker. His new teammates rallied around Ohtani, who was found to have no part in the wrongdoing, and publicly it didn't seem to affect him even if he was privately distressed by it. By June, the uproar had subsided. Mizuhara pleaded guilty to federal bank and tax fraud charges and admitted to stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani. The public got a glimpse of Ohtani's softer side in August, when his dog Decoy delivered a first pitch to his owner on their shared bobblehead night. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje exchanged an endearing high-five with Ohtani at the plate. As a result, Decoy became a celebrity in his own right, with his breed (pronounced COY-ker-HUND-che) making the list of the most mispronounced words of 2024. He and Ohtani were mentioned during the telecast of last month's National Dog Show, where the small Spaniel-type breed was among the competitors. "The number of the breed has kind of dwindled, so by him gaining a little bit of popularity hopefully that brings up the number of his breed," Ohtani said. "I do feel like we were able to, in a small way, contribute to the popularity of the dog and I'm sure Decoy himself would be happy about that." Ohtani will be looking to top himself next year while eyeing a repeat World Series title. "It's almost like right now you can lock in the Most Valuable Player in the National League award because no one has that ability or talent," Roberts said. "I'm just excited to see what '25 has for Shohei Ohtani." Trump threatens 100% tariff on the BRIC bloc of nations if they act to undermine the dollarThe Washington Commanders have had their best season in years with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. His play, along with Dan Quinn’s coaching, has put the team in a position to make the postseason. However, this team is still recovering from the previous regime. The previous staff made many decisions on personnel that did not work out. One of those players was former first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes. He struggled in his rookie season and has not improved. At times, he has been unplayable. While many first-round picks will get plenty of chances with their team, the Commanders decided to part ways with Forbes on Saturday. Washington Commanders Release Emmanuel Forbes Emmanuel Forbes was the 16th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The biggest knock on him coming out of Mississippi State was his size. Coming out of college, he was only 166 pounds and is currently listed at 180. Analysts worried about Forbes’ ability to deal with the physical nature of the NFL. In 20 games for the Washington Commanders, he had two interceptions and 12 passes defended but was often benched by Ron Rivera because teams would target him. This season, he only appeared in six games and was a trade candidate by the deadline. It seems they were not able to find a trade partner and opted to release him. To make matters worse for the Washington Commanders, Christian Gonzalez was taken right after Forbes and has been one of the best young defenders in the NFL. If Gonzalez is able to develop into one of the best defensive backs in the league, this could go down as one of the all-time draft mistakes. Under Ron Rivera, the team had trouble drafting talent, and with the release of Forbes, no players drafted by the previous regime remain on the roster. Drafting Trouble The last five years of first-round draft picks are no longer on the roster for the Washington Commanders. Teams are able to sustain success by drafting and developing. While every draft pick won’t be a hit, teams need to get at least a few quality starters over a five-year period. Here are all the first-round picks from 2019-2023 for the Commanders. Montez Sweat: Traded to the Chicago Bears last season Dwayne Haskins: Released Chase Young: Traded to the San Francisco 49ers. Currently on the New Orleans Saints Jamin Davis: Released Jahan Dotson: Traded to the Philadelphia Eagles this year Emmanuel Forbes: Released While the Washington Commanders did receive some compensation for a few of these players, it is still a gut punch for fans to look at this list. It is hard to build winning teams with this many misses. Final Thoughts The Washington Commanders have already changed the narrative in the first round this year. Daniels looks like the long-term answer at quarterback despite some recent struggles. The new coach and GM will get more chances to build this team through the draft. If Washington is going to become a consistent contender in the NFC East, they will need to draft and develop much better. Colombia map. INQUIRER STOCK PHOTO BOGOTA — Colombian authorities on Friday denied a United Nations report claiming that the bodies of 20,000 people who were forcibly disappeared over decades of conflict were being kept at Bogota airport. On Thursday, the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances stated that “thousands of unidentified bodies lie in poorly managed cemeteries or storage facilities,” citing “a hangar at Bogota airport where around 20,000 unidentified bodies are currently stored.” Bogota Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan denied the report that followed a visit by a UN delegation to Colombia. He asked the UN to substantiate its claims. Isabelita Mercado, senior advisor on peace and reconciliation at Bogota town hall, told the W station the city’s cemeteries held the bodies of around 5,500 unidentified missing people or people who had been identified but whose bodies have not been claimed. READ: Colombia turns drug-fumigation planes into fire fighters The UN said its report was based on information it had received from local authorities but didn’t say which ones. A press officer did not respond to Agence France-Presse’s requests for comment. The UN’s special envoy to Colombia, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, also questioned the report. He told Noticias Caracol news channel that its authors did “not represent any United Nations entity” and asked them to “clarify” the report and possibly “rectify” it. READ: From Colombia’s jungle to the world’s fish tanks The Search Unit for Persons Reported Missing, which is in charge of locating and identifying the thousands of people who disappeared over the course of six decades of conflict, said it had “no information” on the existence of a “site of forensic interest” near the airport. The organization has counted more than 104,000 people who went missing during the conflict between security forces, guerrillas, paramilitaries and drug cartels which began in the 1960s. The new Mahayuti government, which swept to power with a landslide victory in the recent assembly elections, will be sworn in at a grand event in Mumbai on December 5. The swearing-in will take place even as the standoff between the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over sharing of power in the government is yet to be resolved. All eyes are on Shinde, who has kept everyone, including the BJP, guessing about his next move. The swearing-in ceremony, to be held at Azad Maidan, will take place in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement was made by state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule on social media. There is no formal announcement on the chief minister-designate yet. Also read: Will Eknath Shinde accept deputy CM post or join Narendra Modi's cabinet? Shiv Sena leader says... “Oath taking ceremony of the Mahayuti government will be held in the presence of the pride of the world, honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, on Thursday, December 5, at 5 pm, at Azad Maidan, Mumbai,” Bawankule said in a post on his social media handle. The ceremony will also be attended by Union home minister Amit Shah, and top leaders and chief ministers of the ruling NDA coalition. Other venues such as Wankhede stadium, Brabourne stadium, Mahalaxmi Racecourse and Shivaji Park were considered before Azad Maidan was chosen. Bawankule’s announcement came as a surprise for Sena leaders, who said the BJP had decided on December 5 unilaterally, without consulting its allies, the Shiv Sena or NCP. Sena MLA and spokesperson Sanjay Shirsat said, “Leaders of all the three parties i.e. Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, should have announced (the timing of the swearing-in). But it’s possible that the BJP had consulted the CM before announcing the venue and date.” Meanwhile, outgoing chief minister Eknath Shinde, who earlier this week announced that the decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah would be acceptable to him and his party, has conceded the chief minister’s post. The BJP leadership has given him the option to join the government as deputy chief minister but he is also insisting on being given the home department, a pivotal portfolio which includes governing the police. The BJP has denied his request. Also read: Maharashtra CM deal sealed? Eknath Shinde's ‘positive’ reaction after meeting Amit Shah Shinde on Friday abruptly left for his hometown in Satara district, postponing discussions with Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The three leaders were to meet to work out details of government formation over the weekend. His party said he was unwell and needed rest. A doctor attending on him told the media that Shinde had developed a fever, a throat infection and a cold, and has been put on an intravenous drip. Shinde’s son and Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde said no discussions were held on Saturday as his father was away in his hometown, and he would return on Sunday. Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut claimed that Shinde had taken ill as he was upset at the turn of events. “He is deeply upset that he has been denied the CM’s post. He was made chief minister in 2022 only because he split the Shiv Sena,” Raut remarked. Meanwhile, BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde called on party national president J P Nadda. Party sources said the BJP leadership is assessing the situation, especially in the context of talk that the party is replacing a Maratha chief minister with a Bramhin leader (Fadnavis). The party leadership is also seeking the views of state BJP leaders on Cabinet formation. Meanwhile, the administration has begun preparations for the new government. The Winter Session of the state legislature is likely to be held in Nagpur from December 16 to 24, and the legislature secretariat, Nagpur collectorate, Nagpur city police, and local public works department, have begun preparations.QNL backs initiative to protect Palestinian, Lebanese heritage
Life insurers in Bangladesh saw some 3.47 lakh policies discontinued in the January-September period this year amid worsening financial health of clients, political changeover and repeated flooding devastating lives and livelihoods in vast areas of the country. Besides, unclear policy data and fragile customer confidence in the local insurance sector contributed to policy discontinuations, according to sector insiders. In 2023, some 15.42 lakh customers of a total of 36 life insurance companies saw their policies lapse, according to regulatory data, and the trend did not see much improvement this year. In the first nine months of 2024, Delta Life Insurance Company Limited topped the policy lapse list, with 56,338 of its clients shelving different types of insurance payments. On the list, National Life Insurance Company Ltd and Popular Life Insurance Company Ltd appeared second and third respectively, according to the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (Idra). Pragati Life Insurance PLC saw 23,023 of its policies lapse, the fourth highest, while Alpha Islami Life Insurance Ltd saw 21,917 of its life policies discontinued. A policy lapse occurs when policyholders fail to pay their premiums on time, leading to the cancellation of insurance coverage. "Lapsed policies are bad for both customers and insurers," said SM Ibrahim Hossain, director of the Bangladesh Insurance Academy, a state-run institute that trains insurance professionals. For customers, he explained that a policy lapse means losing the safety net that could protect them against unforeseen events. For insurers, it leads to revenue loss and negative impacts on financial stability and customer relationships, he added. However, Uttam Kumar Sadhu, chief executive officer of Delta Life Insurance Company, is optimistic about getting back "a large number" of their lost clients by the end of 2024. "Customers often face financial crises due to various reasons. Due to this, they understandably cannot pay the money on time," said Sadhu, whose company had around 12.43 lakh policies in September after subtracting the discontinued ones. "After three to four months, a large portion of them will revive," he said. "This has been observed in the past as well." The CEO said initiatives have been taken to provide rewards and incentives to revive the lapsed policies. The results of the improvement will be available by the end of December. Nura Alam Siddikie Ovee, chief executive officer of Alpha Islami Life Insurance Limited, said the main reason behind policy discontinuation is the financial crisis. "Many people are now in financial hardship due to high inflation and the economic fallout stemming from the political changeover in August," he added. In addition, as many insurance agents are changing companies, taking their customers to their new firms, this is another reason many policies have been discontinued, he said. Ovee also pointed out that many policyholders were convinced to buy policies but later found those did not apply to them. "Some policies have also been cancelled due to this." Md Jalalul Azim, managing director of Pragati Life Insurance, said one of the reasons behind the policy discontinuation was the fierce nationwide protest in July-August, which ultimately hurt incomes and slowed down the overall economy. Besides, he said flooding in August and September in many areas, including Cumilla, Feni, Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Chattogram and Sylhet, deterred their agents from collecting premiums from many clients on time, resulting in policy lapses. Azim mentioned that those policies can be reactivated by paying late fees. However, they have waived the fees until December this year to encourage customers to renew the policies. Md Kazim Uddin, managing director of National Life Insurance PLC, said many of their customers had their policies matured recently, but problem banks could not pay them due to a liquidity crisis. This has created a confidence crisis among customers, which has had a negative impact on the insurance sector. In view of this, many customers did not deposit the insurance premium and a lot of policies have lapsed, he said. Apart from this, due to high inflation, which has been above 9 percent since March last year, it has become difficult for many people to maintain their normal lives, he said. People are breaking their savings to meet family expenses, he said, adding that as a result, many are unable to deposit premiums on time, resulting in policy lapses. Zahangir Alam, a director and the spokesperson of the Idra, told The Daily Star last Thursday that they are pursuing insurers in various ways to keep the number of discontinued policies low. Besides, companies that have the highest number of policy lapses are being monitored closely, he said. In the last 14 years, more than 26 lakh insurance policies have lapsed in Bangladesh. In 2009, the total number of policies was nearly 1.12 crore while it fell to 85.88 lakh in 2023, according to Idra data.Romania is going to the polls Sunday 28th November to elect a President. Bitcoin has surpassed the $100,000 mark as the post-election rally continues. What's next?South Carolina has won six straight games, and one of the catalysts has been the improved free-throw shooting of Nick Pringle. When South Carolina (9-3) faces Presbyterian (7-7) in the final nonconference game for both teams on Monday in Columbia, S.C., the Gamecocks won't have to hold their breath when Pringle toes the line. During South Carolina's surge, which includes wins over three power conference teams, Pringle has made 26 of 30 (86.7 percent) free-throw attempts. It's a remarkable improvement from his 51.7 percent career success rate entering the season. Last month, in his South Carolina debut after transferring from Alabama, Pringle's foul shooting woes continued as he shot 3-for-8 in stunning 74-71 upset at the hands of the visiting North Florida. But video work with coach Lamont Paris convinced Pringle that he needed to quicken his routine and tweak his set point, which is where a player's eyes focus on the rim. "How long it was taking him to release the ball once he started his free throw process was really long, really, really long," Paris said. "So he shortened it." In a 74-48 win over Radford on Dec. 22, Pringle made all 10 of his free throws. His work at the line is no small matter, as he has taken the second-most free throws on the team (61). Pringle averages 10.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, combining with Collin Murray-Boyles (16.2 points, 9.3 rebounds) to give the Gamecocks a formidable duo inside. Presbyterian enters after suffering its first home loss this season, 86-81 in overtime to Manhattan on Dec. 21. It was a frustrating defeat after the Blue Hose led by 19 points in the first half. There was a positive, however, as Carl Parrish delivered 23 points and nine rebounds, both career highs. It was a performance that sixth-year coach Quinton Ferrell has been awaiting. "Seeing him play like that offensively is not a shock to me because that's really what he's capable of," Ferrell said. "He's a big-time offensive player." Parrish combines in the backcourt with the Blue Hose's top two threats: Kory Mincy, who averages 14.9 points and 4.6 assists per game, and Kobe Stewart, who scores at a 14.4 ppg clip. Located just 60 miles apart, South Carolina and Presbyterian (Clinton, S.C.) have a long history, with their first game coming nearly 108 years ago. The Gamecocks lead the series 33-8. --Field Level MediaAs global supply chains grow increasingly complex, traditional management approaches — heavily reliant on metrics like cost and annual spend — can no longer fully ensure operational continuity. The COVID-19 pandemic, combined with rapid technological advances, exposed significant vulnerabilities in these one-dimensional strategies. This shift has led to multi-tier criticality management (MTCM), a methodology developed to assess suppliers based on the criticality of their materials to end-to-end operations, enabling proactive risk management and sustainable supply chain resilience. Conventional metrics, like cost and annual spend, have historically guided supplier performance evaluations, but they miss the true operational risks posed by potential disruptions. Low-cost materials, often classified as "non-critical," can bring production to a halt if unavailable. MTCM identifies and prioritizes these essential, low-cost items by highlighting their operational and strategic impact, extending beyond mere dollar value. According to McKinsey, an estimated 80% of supply chain disruptions stem from challenges within tier-two suppliers or further downstream. A Resilinc report reveals that companies using multi-tier supplier evaluations see up to 20% fewer disruptions, and a 25% improvement in operational efficiency. Such findings underscore the urgent need for a holistic approach such as MTCM to maintain stability across supply chain tiers. MTCM accounts for how low-cost items may have an outsized impact on quality, production, and downstream costs. Quality issues may arise due to factors such as shelf-life and material sensitivity. For example, materials sensitive to heat or light might pass initial quality checks but fail under specific environmental conditions. This aspect addresses logistical challenges involving climate, shipping routes, and packaging needs. Temperature-sensitive materials may require specialized storage or transport solutions to prevent spoilage or degradation. MTCM encourages contingency planning for logistical sensitivities, to avoid unanticipated losses or delays. Effective communication with suppliers of critical materials is foundational. MTCM evaluates suppliers based on responsiveness, inventory management and forecasting abilities. Suppliers unable to maintain adequate safety stock levels can lead to significant operational delays. By incorporating communication metrics into performance reviews, MTCM fosters stronger, more reliable supplier relationships. Beyond supply and quality, MTCM integrates logistics, transportation, and geopolitical considerations. If materials from specific regions face seasonal transit issues, MTCM urges closer scrutiny of alternative suppliers or expanded safety stock levels.Inter-dependencies in machinery and materials. Certain materials directly impact the functionality of others, making inter-dependency management essential. For instance, a flaw in one machine part may increase maintenance needs, or multiple components might need to work in synergy for machinery to operate seamlessly. A pharmaceutical company faced recurring losses due to temperature-sensitive materials failing quality tests before use. By implementing MTCM, they adopted temperature-controlled shipping methods, reducing downtime related to quality by 40%, leading to millions in savings. This shift improved product availability and customer satisfaction, strengthening the company’s market position. A manufacturing firm experienced frequent production halts, traced to flawed machinery parts needing significant design updates. MTCM prioritized these parts for immediate redesign and proactive maintenance, leading to a 20% increase in productivity. This adjustment saved millions in potential revenue losses and reduced maintenance-related frustrations. In the medical devices industry, vital components sourced from geopolitically unstable regions caused continuous disruptions. By adopting MTCM, the company identified backup suppliers, and mitigated future risks by maintaining substantial safety stocks. The result was a 30% improvement in on-time production rates, bolstering the company's reputation for reliability. A food processing firm encountered quality issues with shelf-life-sensitive ingredients sourced globally. Seasonal climate impacts on transit routes further shortened these products’ shelf life. With MTCM, the company invested in advanced monitoring and climate-adaptive storage solutions, reducing waste by 25%, and improving overall operational efficiency. Consumables with highly variable consumption rates often lead to inventory mismanagement. During a high-demand season, a company implementing MTCM utilized historical data and AI-driven forecasting to adjust cycle counts and improve safety-stock levels, reducing stockouts by 15% while meeting consumer demand without overstocking.Small package item management in large warehouses. In large warehousing operations, low-cost but crucial items are often misplaced, leading to costly downtimes. After MTCM implemented better storage conditions and locator systems, the company reduced downtime incidents by 20%, translating to significant annual savings. By reducing non-value-adding tasks and enhancing team morale, MTCM becomes a catalyst for a cultural shift toward collaboration and continuous improvement.Enhanced operational efficiency. MTCM addresses root causes of frequent delays and bottlenecks, positively impacting productivity and overall equipment effectiveness. With reduced downtime and well-managed material dependencies, teams can reinvest time in training, 5S, and lean initiatives, fostering a safer and more efficient workplace. MTCM reduces inter-departmental friction by aligning operations, planning, procurement, and quality departments under a unified methodology. By fostering accountability and eliminating finger-pointing, it enhances morale and productivity.Driving innovation and continuous improvement. This unified approach encourages creativity. Teams, once bogged down by reactive problem-solving, can now focus on proactive improvements, cultivating a culture of innovation. Implementing MTCM requires robust change management and strong leadership support. Common challenges include managing dependencies, ensuring supplier communication, and navigating resource constraints. Engaging senior consultants and supply chain experts can streamline this transition by offering guidance on advanced tools and data-driven insights. Employing change-management strategies such as transparent communication and employee empowerment ensures smoother adoption and sustained success. In a world marked by unpredictable disruptions, multi-tier criticality management (MTCM) offers a strategic path to heightened resilience and operational efficiency. By prioritizing material criticality beyond cost, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, companies can unlock new levels of profitability and sustainability. For organizations ready to revolutionize their supply chain management approach, MTCM represents an essential framework for aligning practices with today’s dynamic and unpredictable global landscape.
